Home office - chairs

Howdy all, I'm finally moved into Norfolk! I'll be working from home for the foreseeable. I've found a sit-stand desk that goes low enough for me, and I'm very tempted by one of those kneeling chairs, as a standard office chair, no matter how adjusted, never seems to be right for me.

Has anyone with reasonably well-managed RA used one? I can definitely see that during a flare I wouldn't want to use it, but then is that any worse than an unyielding unsupportive too-large swivel chair? Tips and advice welcome!

Welcome to East Anglia Chrissy. I’m interested in the replies you get as I’ve often thought about getting one of these chairs and a sit/stand desk but I keep dithering, it’s expensive to then not be helpful. I’ll be watching out for how you get on 😊 I hope it works for you.

If/when a decision is made, and they get delivered, you're welcome to come and try it out!

I don't know if this is helpful but I've always used a wedge seat cushion to give myself the right pelvic tilt - recommended by both a chiropractor and an Alexander Technique teacher.

Maybe I should try and see a professional!

This was pre-RA when I was having back pain (which I'd been prone to for years) and had developed sciatica. Basically it was down to poor posture and the seat wedge helped but mostly it was Alexander Technique that sorted it out.

I bought a saddle kneeling chair after trying one at the Alexander Technique clinic.

I found it OK for short periods but my ankles, knees and hips gradually got worse using it.

I gave it to my d-in-law who finds it very useful for her work

Hi Chrissy34

I love my sit/stand desk, but confess I’ve NEVER lowered it to a sitting height in the 3years I’ve had it. I stand all the time.

Re chairs, when I did use to sit....

Kneeling chairs, in my experience, are OK for short periods but they are really bad for my particular back issues. They require a strong core, and I think if your back is weak, which mine is, they strain the muscles and ligaments, as you’re not getting any support at all. For me they’re a recipe for disaster but I know some people love them.

I prefer a sized chair with back support and a tilting seat. Yours sounds awful (!) but I’m not sure a kneeling chair would be better as it’s so dynamic - it’s hard work keeping yourself upright. I think if you’re home working and sitting for long periods you need a proper chair, and to take regular breaks when you get up and move.

Hope your sort something out. Don’t let me put you off a kneeling chair - you might love them, I’d just try to borrow one before you commit to it X
