Carpal boss or nodule?

For a few years now I have had problems bending my left wrist back and never thought at the time that it was anything other than a stiff wrist. It stopped me from doing floor exercises that involved being on all fours, so I just stopped doing them. I also noticed a small bump which feels hard (not like the ganglion underneath my wrist which is soft and sometimes goes away). I did some research at the time and decide it was a carpal boss which is apparently bone growth and not usually painful as it is hard. The weird thing is mine always has been a bit tender and then even weirder it went away until recently. It's back and I have been feeling it and it's not as hard as I thought. Could it be a rheumatoid nodule anyone? It's interesting that inflammation was seen in my wrists on the ultrasound scan because apart from that at the time of the scan not had an issue with my wrists.

I will take a pic tomorrow.

Sounds like a ganglion....they come & go & can be soft or hard whether you have RA or not.

I had one under my wrist that looked as if a pea had been inserted under theSkin....

Whilst it didn’t hurt I ignored it, but eventually it got really painful, so

I had it removed.

Show your lump to your rheumy nurse...she has no doubt seen many like lumps & will be able to advise you.

Interesting, thanks. It feels quite different to the one underneath but I'll ask. Is it something I should mention now before my next appointment in September? I actually have lots of hard little lumps. 2 on my elbows some elongated above both knees. Had them scanned a while ago and was told they were nothing bad.

I’d drop your rheumy nurse a photo of it & see what she thinks.

If you have a lot of these little lumps it’s probably nothing, but it won’t hurt to ask.

Could be synovial fluid which I have on the back of my hand next to my wrist. I've had it for a few years, it started off small but is relatively large now. It's fairly soft to touch and can vary in size, but that's less noticeable now it's bigger. I presumed was either a ganglion or nodule until I asked my reumy last January. It's troubled me more as it's got bigger and can be a bit uncomfortable on times with short sharp stabbing pains if I move my hand in a certain way. I find wearing a sturdy wrist support helps. I think they can be drained but have a nasty habit of returning, apparently.

yes, I read last night about the synovial fluid. tbh at the moment it's only tender and not causing a real problem but more one of those odd things that I think is just the beginning...

Synovial fluid does fit with you having a history of wrist problems. Best check with your rheumy though.
