Hydroxychloroquine - stomach

Sorry! Feel I am living on this site. Been on Hydro just over a week and yesterday started very sharp pain in upper stomach (between ribs). Just recovering from another bout now. Read this is a common side effect.

Question - Does it wear off with use and as body adjusts or is it bad luck and not for me?

It would be a bank holiday? Just my luck at moment. Have just begun to recover from MTX injection on Tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Realise that I must be in love with the word 'just' today. Just thought I'd mention it. x

Good word just 😁 Hydroxychloroqine wasn’t for me but I had an allergic reaction. If that’s all your having for the moment then I would continue and Monitor it . Try taking with food see if that helps. If your no better over the weekend give Your clinic a ring.

Yes. Food does help. Stomach a weak point for me. Can't take asprin, naproxen, steroids - all end up with very sharp pain. Will continue as long as I can! Thank you for responding. Keep safe.x

I tried Plaquenil twice and it was horrible. I eventually woke up and my sight was gone in one eye. I had been on the med 2 yrs but was still so sick. I had stomach pains, flu symptoms and couldn't get out the bed.About 5 yrs later the doctor was insistent I try it again, symptoms were worse. If it makes you sick ask for another medicine. You only get one body.

Oh my goodness. I read this and took a big intake of breath. How awful! I made the decision last night to stop it. I know from experience that it can take a while for my stomach to heal. I took Omeprazole yesterday after speaking to a Dr. Worked for a couple of hours and then bang. It's the sort of stomach pain that is relentless and invasive. Stomach still sore this morning. Will be phoning the hospital on Monday. I hope that whatever you are on now is working for you. Keep safe and thank you for your response.

I’ve been on hydroxychloroquine for around a yr and a half.. it’s been a saviour but u need to ensure u eat something before taking it.. as for methotrexate injection.. I have mine in an evening and sleep the side effects away.. I was on tablets but they did don’t agree with me.. good luck

Yes. Have taken it with meals and inject MTX at night. Hosptial recognise MTX not for me -they used the term 'treatment failure'. Hoped Hudroxy.. might see me through until I can change meds. Will be calling on Monday to try and carve way forward. So pleased though that it has all worked well for you. Take care and thank you for your response.

I never had any problems with Hydroxychoroquine, and I am so sorry you are suffering. Do make sure that you take it after food as others have said - that always helps to protect your stomach. Good luck!

Tummy always full when I take it but know from experience that once my stomach starts to feel that raw that if I don't stop the irritant I'm in for trouble. Will be seeking further help on Monday. You are right though, we must respect our tummies when taking all these meds. Glad you are OK with Hydroxy. It's all in the luck of the draw I think. Thank you for your reply and keep safe.
