So happy after feeling deflated that bread making by hand was a lost cause found a recipe and made this black treacle soda bread this morning with hardly any effort!
Back on the fresh bread line again!

Soda Bread is delish, more so with treacle! Yum.
My granny always cut a cross in the top of hers before it went into the oven. You could break it into 4 pieces. It went down well with the farm hands at dinnertime with a plate of 'stick to yer ribs' broth.
Stick to your ribs broth is something we make a lot of x
I do this
I was going to suggest soda bread yesterday. We are only just starting to experiment with 'proper' bread making (hubby on furlough), but having issues getting yeast. However, we have been making soda bread (about 35 mins all told) and homemade tomato and basil soup for lunch here for years. The only bread we do know how to make.

i have made soda bread for many years but just forgot that it i a no knead so I am now off!
Can I ask a really stupid question - where do you get buttermilk? Sorry to be so ignorant but my mum thought Findus Crispy Pancakes were haute cuisine and I'm afraid my cooking skills are pathetic - but I really want to try making some bread!
Most supermarkets stock it now but you can easily make it 8oz milk and 2tbsp of fresh lemon juice and then leave to curdle in room temp for about 30mins. Keeps in fridge once curdled for 3days but ideally use immediately. Black treacle bread I made today had just ordinary milk.
Thank you.
We find it at Waitrose. our local Tesc isn't huge and it goes through fazes of what it stocks. we can get it there at the moment and notb from the huge tesco on our delivery, work that one out!
You can make buttermilk if you need to, lots of 'how to's' out there, here is one from Nigella (I often use her for swaps/cheats, like ratios for mixed dried fruit etc) nigella.com/ask/buttermilk-...
Hope that helps,
225g plain 225g self raising 1tsp bicarb 1/2tsp baking powder 2tbsp treacle or syrup or pommegrante molasses 475ml milk 50g porridge oats throw all in a bowl and make a sticky soft dough. if needs more flour add as depends on flour. I throw onto a oven pan as a boule and then handful of oats of top 40mins in oven 200deg. Dough is sticky but can shape sort of. No kneading needed
Just spotted your recipe. Cheers !
Thanks Deeb. Funnily enough my husband bought pomegranate molasses ages ago and hasn't used it (surprise, surprise 🙄🙄!) so might give that a try 😁
We still can't get flour here except for speciality in very small bags.
Thanks for sharing 🙂
Sorry about all the typos. I usually proof read before pressing send. MTX not working so RA fingers and my eyes are blurry today!
Yep I am like that too and sometimes when I re read still miss errors!
Yep . . . particularly annoying ones like to/too and your/you're can escape at times. No brain these days. My students always used to grumble that they weren't in an English lesson when I picked them up on grammatical errors (I taught secondary maths for 25+ years until my mumhad a fall), they'd laugh now.
Yum yum . I did a honey one yesterday. Soda bread is my all time favourite 😋😋
Also make a fruit soda bread love this toasted dripping in butter
Any pointers for a good recipe? grovel, grovel. I prefer tried and tested!
For your first attempt a nice simple recipe is . John and Lisa’s weekend soda bread recipe is fool proof . If you haven’t got butter milk. Lemon juice added to milk works just as well. ( google this for right proportions)
Ooh that looks delicious!!!!
No knead bread by Artisan Steve on you tube is excellent. From basic to a bit more fancy bread.
Just wish I could still get bread flour and yeast.... sigh....
Wishing a good day to all.
There you go Dee, where there's a will there's a way! Go girl, enjoy making bread again, let the good times roll!! Looks pretty good too!
Slightly off at a tangent, the following recipe is lovely, too good just for Easter and easier for RA hands than traditional Simnel cake as you don't have to roll the marzipan out. I found it last year and keep coming back to it. I do love a bit of marzipan. Tried making Stollen this year too . . . (at Christmas I hasten to add).
