I received a shield gov letter few weeks ago and have just this week been given a priority shop slot with tescos so all good. Today , I have received a govt care package of food. Totally unprepared for this, its a lovely gesture but we dont need this help. What can I do, Im worried if I phone up and try and return I’l lose my priority shopping slot. I feel like a terrible fraud and im sure this would really help someone else. What can I do ? Thankyou for listening

If you have a food bank close by they would appreciate it. :) x

I don’t think the one is linked to the other....after all if you don’t take the food parcel then you doubly need the priority shopping slot! Phone them up and discuss it.

Your council organise them so call them and say you dint need it .

People who have had a food parcel as priority but don't need them have usually donated them to the food bank.

Locally, I had a phone call from the council, checking I was OK, and asking if I wanted a food parcel, so I declined. And to let them know if I had any problems.

I feel really lucky here, so many people have offered help and I get regular texts from my neighbours saying they are ordering something for delivery, do I want to add to the order, or offering to pick something up from the shops if they are going.

Thankyou everyone for your replies. I am going to contact a local food bank . All I wanted was a priority shop slot. I did tick the no on the gov register if you didnt have family or friends to help but now think I should change to ‘yes’ , but would I lose my priority slot?? My family live nearby but my DIL is frontine NHS while my son is furlouged looking after the baby so I dont want to burden them? So now hoping the food bank will collect. Does anyone know if these parcels come each week ?? Thankyou again

food bank donation is a good idea, but don't refuse a priority slot with Tesco.. you may need to use it again if this goes on. I've just got my firstpriority slot and have to confirm the booking and start a basket which i can add to later, all this within 3 hours of confirming the booking. so it's 'use it or lose it' where I am. I'll be stocking up my larder with oil, pulses, grains etc plus some fresh foods. good luck.

I'd keep the parcel, most of the food in it can be kept for a time when you can't get a priority slot. If you feel so bad about it, do you have vulnerable neighbours who might be grateful for it, or possibly a local food bank who could collect it and use it for others. And yes, I think you wll get one a week.

Thankyou for your reply , I have arranged for a food bank who will pick up the box tomorrow and will see what happens next week . Many thanks everyone , stay safe

The free food package is completely separate from the Tesco shopping slot. Cancel the food package if its not needed, your Tesco slot will not be affected.

Happy shopping

Is there a food bank near you. If you ring a local church I am sure they will know one and arrange to take things there for you. x

I have rung the volunteer food bank too. They will collect the boxes as they take a couple of weeks to stop coming.

I have received 4 govt boxes and I have tried 3 times to cancel them. They come from my city council and each person I’ve spoken to in the phone has said they will ‘update the system.’ Last Friday the delivery driver said they were told to continue delivering to everyone on the list because ‘you might not manage to get a supermarket delivery every week.’

Thankyou, that is something to think about. Suppose it’s like everything now, just go from one week to the next. Thankyou again, have a good day everyone 😀

That’s sweet , aww I would send it to a food bank .... then someone will benefit if not a few will benefit as you will probably get one weekly . Xx keep safe to all xx

The food boxes are weekly. The priority slots don't always work out, I've found. My family urged me to keep getting the food box, as it gives the basics if needed, like bread and milk, which we ran out of the week before boxes started.. as my daughter said, I can always donate to the food bank later on.
