Hi , Have a look at Citizens Advice website. They have coronavirus and work information under “If your employer has told you not to work”. You will need to scroll down to “ If you or someone you live with is extremely vulnerable” and beyond. Hope this helps.

That's wrong , you are not sick , look on the government website or call your union. Some employers should look at the new law!!

It's all a bit confusing - my boss is looking into it as the moment. That said, from what I can gather your employer CAN choose to furlough you if you are shielding, but it is their choice:

"Employers are also entitled to furlough employees who are being shielded or off on long-term sick leave. It is up to employers to decide whether to furlough these employees."

So, you may be able to persuade your employer to do this, as they will (eventually) be compensated by the government for the money they pay you (80% wages). It's a bit of a mess as you are essentially relying on their good will and their ability to weather the cost until the gov scheme kicks in. Hope this is the case for you. xx

The payments will come in on the 30th of the month and furloughed staff put through paye portal system on the 22nd. It was set up yesterday.

Speak to your employer again. There’s no reason in the world why they wouldn’t furlough you, unless you can work from home. As an employer, I’ve firloughed a lady that left before the announcements as she fell into a gap as her new job didn’t start. You won’t be able to claim SSP either as you don’t have a fit to work certificate. You could be able to claim universal credit, but there is no reason for them not to furlough you, unless they’re a pain in the posterior of course.

If you are off work on SSP because you are sick, you will/would be returning to work once you recover.

Your employer can then furlough you at the end of this period if they wish.

This will mean you will receive up to 80 percent of your income from the government, not from your employer.

IF you are NOT on sick leave then they have to furlough you they can't have it both ways.
