"Trump has developed a public obsession with hydroxychloroquine as a miracle cure for coronavirus...The basis for the president’s proclamations of the drug as a “game changer” is a study carried out by a group of scientists in March, but the results have been openly dismissed by experts and major medical bodies."

I guess this is what happens when you don't listen to experts. Sigh! I just hope everyone that actually needs the drug can still get hold of it.

In a bit of an update: I got my call back from the rheumatology department today and after discussing various symptoms etc I asked about potential shortages and what to do if I couldn't get my prescription when it's due and she said to call her back as there is enough stock for rheum patients in the hospital. How much, of course, is another matter.

That's good news in the short term at least. Like you said - depends how much they have. Thank goodness our government isn't pushing hydroxychloroquine as a cure. Can people in the States just go to pharmacies and buy drugs like this over the counter? Or maybe they can get prescriptions more easily? It's not the sort of thing people can panic buy over here, thank goodness.

I Dont think US companies does not know how to produce Hydroxychloroquine. the US companies do not want to spend their time in production of the cheap drug that will fetch them no potential benefit. They are focusing on vaccine development which will fetch them a windfall. The US companies are trying to make a kill (literally) in the COVID-19 pandemic. The US companies are more concerned about their profit than their nation.

The US president on the other hand to ward of mounting criticism trying gimmick to boost his image. if the US really wants the drug, they will deal with the Indian government stealthily to avoid media scrutiny. The US president used Hydroxychloroquine to boost his image than save the people. That’s the sorry state of US democracy.

By the way, the world is betting on fraudulent science. hydroxychloroquine is used to suppress the immune system in immunehyperactive diseases like arthritis and lupus. is it possible to cure an infection with an immunosupressive drug?

Although my rheumatology nurse cleared that up for me; it isn't immune suppressing but disease modifying. It was one of the reasons I didn't want to take it at first, I thought it would make me more susceptible but she said hydroxy was not immune suppressing. However, she pointed out that RA/PsA/Lupus/Spondylosis, all the things I 'may' have do compromise one's immune system and that I should start taking it immediately! So I did.
