Severe dry mouth and no saliva, any ideas?

Hessie5 profile image

Hi

These past few nights I am waking up with an extremely dry mouth and no saliva. Really not pleasant.

Has anyone else experienced this? If yes, what did you do or can you recommend?

Not sure if it's the meds.

Appreciate any feedback.

Hi Hessie I got this when on mtx tablets then it passed after 2 weeks. Drink plenty of water before bed time helped. I now take the injection so no dry mouth at all. ☺

Hi Frankiefocus - appreciate your feedback. I recently started this new biologic and on lots of Ibuprofen for my pain. Wasn’t sure if it’s the active inflammation either. Been drinking about a litre of water (so constantly up at night heading to the loo 😏). Shall up the intake of water and pray that fixes things. Blessings and good health to you.😌

Hi Hessie you should ask your rheumy or doctor for naproxen as for me it works better then ibuprofen for my RA pain and flare ups... but dont take my word for it as you are on biologics and Im not sure if you can take naproxen aswell.

Hi - thanks for your response. I do have naproxen but didn't feel it was helping - had shooting pains and burning in my tummy. I did take it with food. How many do you take? I may give it another go 😌

No more than two a day

I was told by my Dr that if I was taking Naproxen for more than a few days then I should also take Omperazole because the naproxen will upset your stomach, do you take omperazole with the naproxen ?

I take mtx by injection but still have dry mouth at night and need to drink and swill water around my mouth several times during the night. So in my case it is not related to the drug but the disease. My eyes are also dry for which I am rescribed drugs.

You can get sprays but I just have a bottle next to my bed just sip it so I’m not on loo all night you can use. Empty spray bottles what you use on plants as well

Thanks Georgiab - I shall certainly do some digging as it is not a good feeling. I keep squeezing my tongue! Take care of yourself 😌

This may be shogrens, an associated auto immune thats causes dry mucus membranes. Its either primary or secondary to RA. I have the same. My mouth feels like paper in the morn and my nose is sore and dry too and stuffed so mouth stays open - its a vicious circle. If its bad enough go see gp I am flagging it up as i have first appointment in 8 months with Rheaumy nurse.

Oh no - I pray not 😕 I shall take this up with my Rheumy next week. All the best Sallygrain - thanks for the update too.

Yes mines sygrens it’s hard to stay on top of it

Sounds like the start of Sjrogrens which i have. You need a specialist. Dont panic its mainly treatable.

Hessie5 profile image
Hessie5 in reply toHattie23

Thanks for the feedback. I must admit I did Google it and symptoms point to it - I was a somewhat fed up but realise there really is nothing I can do with what awful RA throws my way despite every effort to put out this fire. Take care of yourself 😌

I suffer with dry mouth and dry eyes-My Rheumatologist prescribed via my GP Saliva spray which is good during the night rather than sipping water(resulting in many loo trips) Sipping water little and often during the day is what my Rheumatoligist suggested. I also have preservative free eye drops prescribed. Hope this helps.

Hi Lolamylo - dry mouth is an under statement I literally have no saliva 😕 - shall try to see if Boots have something and speak to my GP and Rheumy to do tests too. Many thanks for reaching out and your kind advice. Hope all is good for you. 😌

Hi Hessie. I get SALIVIX Salivary stimulant pastilles from my GP. Never go any where with out them. Also I swill carbonated water that sometimes works. Hope this might help. Nothing worse than when talking or sleeping your mouth goes completely dry.

I have had a bad dry mouth for years. It can be Oral Thrush but sounds more like medication . Plenty of water can help but I have not got RA but OA, Heart and Steroid Sprays and Strong Codeine pain killers. So quite a mix of tablets.

Just keep hydrated that is important and I chew sugar free gum..

Thank you for your kind advice. I need to add sugar free gum to my list 😌 Take care.

I experienced this too and tried the sprays and lozenges available in US. They didn’t help much. I chew gum during the day and make sure I have a bottle of water next to the bed at night. I tried to get saliva for a DNA ancestry test a few months ago and it was impossible! Best of luck to you!

Thank you Sparrowtracks. I have been drinking lots of water. All the best.

I shall certainly read up on this. I don't think there is a specific test either. Hope all is well for you. 😌 Appreciate your time.

Yes I also have the same problem , my nurse said it’s a secondary problem connected to RA called Sicca syndrome. The Dr can give you special saliva sweets or you can buy them from chemist, you may also experience dry eyes and dry skin it’s all connected. I always take water to bed in case of emergency and you have to take special care of your teeth and gums with this problem as you could get a sore mouth

Funny enough my tongue is sore today - so upping the dental routine. Thanks for your helpful reply. All the best to you. 😌

Ohhh nice 😌 added to my list! Thank you.

My mouth gets dry during the night not a lot you can do. I’ve started to get dry mouth during the day and found chewing gum helps. ( hate seeing people chew gum)
