My brother has panic too

Slow down your breathing use a paper bag if needed

I wonder what anxiety is triggering off your panic attacks? Can you (during the day when it's never as scary) think about what sort of thing you are dreaming about when you wake with the panic?

For me the dream has been getting shut in places and not being able to get out - being stuck in one position somewhere. I thought about it a lot in the daytime and I think it is something to do with my fear that I'm going to be unable to move in the future and lose my independence. I've now done a 'living will' expressing what I want to happen if I can't communicate my own wishes in this situation and I have slept better since (well - at least the lack of panic attacks has been an improvement, can't say the pain is helping currently!)

The techniques of overcoming a panic attack I'm sure you know - counting your breath in and out, using a paper bag to rebreathe your expired air, etc. The other possible help is a meditation with a picture and some movement so that you really need to concentrate on it and get yourself into it. I picture sitting by a stream in the sunshine with a breeze moving the trees across the stream (it's a real place on Dartmoor that I used to love to go to). A young lad I knew used dolphins playing in the waves.

Best of luck!

Thank u kindly x

Had similar especially at start associated with breathlessness and RD i think plus sleeplessness (which may have been one of drugs at time). It's more fear of what might happen for me and changing way i thought about them helped plus having tools/exercises to do to alleviate them as well.

Best thing I read was dr matt lewis Overcoming Anxiety for these. Also Mindfulness: mark williams/danny penman with free cd. I know you said you tried meditation but this was easy to listen too, slowed my brain down before bed. GP referred me for 8 week cbt course too (better than sleeping pills) all v similar, some of it helpful, some not: it's finding something that resonates with you really. I ve posted about before: sorry if boring others 😄

Exercise esp swimming helps me too: seems to burn off adrenaline. Really sympathise: horrible experience.

Hope some or even one of above helpful; this disease is a real life changer and perfectly understandable effects i think, you're not alone X

Check the drugs you are on with your rheumy nurse ..Prednisolone had similar effects for me.

I responded to Prednisone in the same way. I would talk to my doctor/nurse about alternatives.

Sorry, I must have read it wrong. I also have a history with PTSD and anxiety. Some anxiety in the face of chronic illness is to be expected, yet unwelcome. I have been trying to learn meditation 🧘‍♀️ lol 😂

Do anything fun and try to gain some balance. It is not easy, as I am still trying hard lol but half the fun is in the failures. Find what works for you but make it a healthy option. Walking, yoga, , gardening...a funny movie, music are great. Anxiety tends to build so biofeedback has been a great way to regulate my breathing, just a thought.

I do not do well with drugs but you need to find what works for you , big hugs 🤗

Sympathies! One of the difficulties about panic attacks, and what helps keep them going, is fear of having another one. You could try mindful breathing exercises several times during the day time so you can know how to calm your breathing when feeling panicky.. Panic attacks always involve shallow over breathing so knowing how to calm it down helps. Encourage yourself that it will pass if you don't fight it.

Hi!

I have a lot of anxiety during the day and at night, but have not had a full blown panic attack.... what helps me is going to the gym in the evening and totally make sure I’m complete exhausted . I just go home and crash mindlessly. Also, I find if I do some Pilates or yoga first thing in the morning, my whole day is generally better with less doom and gloom and anxiety! Hope you get better😘

Hi there I’m hearing you , firstly I would start with the meds you are taking , check out all side effects , second think about what you are getting anxious about , what has changed in your life recently ? This is where I would start personally . I’ve been in your situation before and this is how I found a way to recover , it was a combination of things for me . I got bad anxiety in the morning where I found it hard to breath and I’d walk outside and pace around for a while , all I’m saying is have a good look at your life and see what’s making you so uncomfortable it’s giving you anxiety at night and try to find a way to make you feel at ease . Also read more about any meds you’re on . Also keep in mind that any sort of excersize or sport is good for Mind Body and Soul . Good luck with everything .

Xanax helps me. I used to get them on a daily basis and sometimes would get physically ill and have to go to bed til it passed sometimes up to 8 hours. I only take Xanax infrequently now. Always took them as necessary never frequently as you can become dependent. As attacks came on for what seemed no reason it was determined that it was triggered by different things that brought back memories of bad times — PTSD. So it could be something in a movie I’m watching, food I’m eating, a word someone says. If you haven’t tried Xanax see if your doc will prescribe. Within a half hour of taking, attack subsides. I have no side effects from it but make sure you can function well before driving and no alcohol while taking.

See if your doc will prescribe Xanax. Use cautiously. Helps me within half hour.

Tried any anti anxiety drugs? Check with your doc. I’ve trued to post what I take but they won’t let me say it. Sorry.

Hello Deejojo,

I know what you are talking about.....After some google searching, I found a naturopathic doctor who deals with anxiety, panic attacks and other neuropathic afflictions. His treatment plans include bio feedback, HRV (heart rate variability training) to help regulate amygdula and the fight and flight responses. He also prescribed 2 supplements: Gaba (brain calm) and Alpha-GPC (helps improve growth hormone secretion in the brain)

I have just began this treatment this week, but I feel encouraged by the fact that I am pro-active and not allowing myself to depend on anti-anxiety meds. They merely cover up the symptoms, not addressing the underlying issues.

Thinking of you and wishing you courage.

Zusje
