Hi
Would like to know if early retirement at the age of 39 is allowed with 16 years of teaching and ill health reason
I was a nurse for 20 odd years and loved my work. I was retired by Occupational Healt who said that for my future wellbeing it would be better for me. I was 41. It was just before all the disability rules changed in employment. I think you would have to go down that route to get any kind of pension. Having said that my NHS pension is deplorable. Good luck.
Normally early retirement is only available from about 50 or 55 (depending on your employer) and you just get whatever pension you have built up to the date of leaving. However retirement on ill health or medical grounds is possible at any age, and you may get extra years added on to your pension - but it can be difficult to persuade your employer to give it to you and needs a fair bit of medical evidence.
Hi
Just thought it may be helpful to have a chat with the Pensions Advisory Service pensionsadvisoryservice.org...
Best wishes

You will need to look at the rules & regs if your occupational pension scheme. Ask your union rep if you don't have a copy.
I don't think you could access the State Retirement Pension at under 50...& even if you could it would be a pittance, so really think hard about taking this route.
Another case if enquiringly at the CAB I think!
You can only get your state pension at your state pension age, whatever that might be - 65, 66, 67 or I think for younger people it might even be 68 now.
I thought that might be the case....but since the retirement age started drifting I've lost track!
All I know is that every time I get close they change the goal posts.....so I'm not banking on it! Thank heavens for my occupational pension.
I'm so ancient I got mine at 60 & having not contracted out it's worth having as I get the SERPS element too......but I know those who did contract out & they really lost out.
I just wish all the changes that are slipped in should by law have to be published where those affected will see them.......I don't think the financial section of the broadsheets is enough.
Hi. I had to take ill health retirement from nursing but was 50. There is no lower age for this as far as I know, only for state pension. If you are a teacher you may have paid into a pension scheme. You can enquire about how much this will pay, a union if your in one will help you. Generally your employer will get you assessed by a occ health doctor. They will look at your condition and whether you can carrying it out daily or whether they can offer you a position on the same pay. If not they will offer ill health retirement. You can speak to your gp or consultant yourself and get reports to support you. If you are off work you can claim employment support allowance. This continues when you get your small pension as they will top it up. Its not much but it helps.
Best to loom at your own personal contribution based if you are married.
