Hip bone tenderness

Have any of you with RA had a problem with hip bone tenderness. I noticed it a couple of months ago. It is tender when pressed on and I noticed last night that when I laid on my left side it hurt. Do you know if RA can cause this or if it could be something else?

Oh yes Zeke I have tenderness there too. I've spent the past 2yrs unable to sleep on my left side because of it. I've been told by my gp that it's caused by bursitis in my hip as I also have stiffness and groin pain, especially when trying to climb into the car or walk up or down stairs.

I've had steroid injections into the area which help somewhat but am finally waiting for an orthopaedic specialist appointment.

Hope yours clears up soon.

Just to add...I believe mine is linked to my Ra as it's much worse when my disease is giving me trouble.

Yes I had hip bursitis in both hips. I couldn’t lie on either side in bed and sometimes I could hardly walk with the pain. I had steroid injections over the course of 18 months and the pain has virtually gone. Whether it would have done anyway I don’t know.

I have terrible hip pain, and I'm positive it's from the RA. My hips are sore and tender pretty much all the time. There could certainly be other causes but if you have RA that's probably the culprit. Ice is helpful when they get really sore. I hope you get some relief soon.

Another hip sufferer here! I was referred to a physio, and after doing the exercises she gave me have found ithas helped by building up the muscles around my hips.

I’ve been doing Pilates since which has also helped. Yes, I still have hip damage and will need replacements but building up my muscles has helped a lot.

Having said that, we are all different!

I have enteropathic arthritis, which generally affects the large rather than small joints and for me that’s hips, shoulders and knees. The RA drugs have really helped with my hips and knees but haven’t helped at all with one of my shoulders which as you describe feels bruised to lie on and badly affects my sleep. My guess in my situation is it’s something other than RA and I’m planning on seeing a physio. Good luck x

Me too - hips, elbows, wrists... The actual bones are painful to touch. My right hip is the worst. I have PSA, not RA, but they seem to be v similar. Mention it to your doc/ rheumy though, just in case. I had hip dysplasia - fixed by pins now- and have toe dysplasia, so it could be something else that is common with inflammatory disease. Thinking of you x

Hi Zeke-17, I was first diagnosed with RA 4 years ago and that was because i had herendous pain in my left hip to the point were i just couldnt move it came on gradually over a 24 hour period and i ended up in hospital were they told me it had become seriously inflamed and infected at first they thought it was septesemia but after extensive tests it turned out to be RA and not just in my hip so i would think that this could be related to your RA and definatley worth getting checked.

Hope this helps

Cheers
