I woke at 2am today with shocking pain from both shoulders to elbows making my funny (not) bone feel like it’s been hit. Dealt with it all day but as it is drawing nearer to bed time the pain is intensifying. Question, is it psychological, because my body and mind are winding down? This disease is hateful but on the spectrum of diseases I thank my lucky stars!

Hi
Hope the pain has settled a little now. I always find pain is much worse at night when there is nothing to distract you. Also when your muscles relax at night the joints are less supported than in the day. During the night we move around without knowing it whereas in the day we automatically protect painful joints. By 2 am any pain relief will have worn off as well. Shoulder pain is so miserable at night isn't it?
Fortunately things are under control for me now but when my pain used to wake me at silly o'clock, I used to give in to it a little. I'd get up and make a warm drink and take a paracetamol .......used to " save" a dose to take in the night. I'd also make up a hot water bottle, then go back to bed and perhaps mess on my iPad for half hour until pain killers and heat took the edge off, then I'd try and get back to sleep. Luckily I was off work then so didn't have to get up too early. I had a few steroid injections into my shoulders which helped them at that time.
I love your attitude and you're right. This disease is nasty but there are loads worse out there. And, no, I don't want any of those either. As others have already said, pain always feels worse at night and I find things are always harder to deal with when I'm tired. If you are really concerned a quick call to your rheumy department could ease your mind. Hugs and merry Christmas
