Does anyone else get excruciating shin pain after a lot of walking that includes lots of uphill walking? Hubby and I went to Nevada City (a small foothill town with lots of interesting small shops) to complete our Christmas shopping. Parking there is a Nightmare so we always park a good distance from the main street and end up walking a good distance and there are always hills-much like going to San Francisco. The next several days afterwards involve pain in my shins for me. Anyone else? What do you do to make it stop? I've taken my meds but still...anything but sitting with heat hurts!

Do you normally walk a fair bit, and on pavements? As it may well be nothing to do with having RA, and more that your calf muscles and ankles aren't as strong as they could be. Shin splints usually appear if you change your exercise routine rapidly, and overdo it suddenly without preparation.
Going shopping is pretty similar to going to the gym, so calf and thigh stretches before you start and when you stop....and wear comfortable shoes! And keep up the stretches to help it go away as quickly as possible.
Helix said what I would have said. I used to get these when I was much younger and used to go to dance classes. They were especially bad after a break for whatever reason. Do you get right calf muscles? If RA affects your feet and ankles, this may be likely. I stretch daily and it’s really quick and easy. You can even do it while sitting; just raise your foot and bring it up towards the sky.
Shin splints was one of the early signs of RA for me. I still get them on occasion. I have no suggestions for curing them but didn’t want you to feel alone with them.
I always get shin splints if I walk too far and that goes back to the days (sadly many years ago) when I overdid walking at Walk for Life abroad. I had no idea it was related to RA and still not sure about that. Prior to trying Bio drug Rituximab and lots of other drugs - none of which worked as I developed allergic reactions to them - I went privately for acupuncture on the shins, which to my surprise worked well. I know with my immuno suppressants now I shouldn't have needles, just because of the risk of infection with having low immunity but perhaps might be worth you asking if it's possible. Shin splints have never completely gone away but now I can't walk very far anyway. Best of luck!
I have those same pains in my shins just standing in the tile floor while drying my hair. I just had my first set of gel shots in my knees after they drained the fluid ot. Wasn’t pleasant but I’m hoping they will work. Go for my first epidural shot tomorrow for my back.
I don’t see a lot of people talking about Leflunomide mostly mexatrate ( I know I spelled it wrong). I have been on Leflunomide 3 weeks now and as I said in a prior post no side effects what so ever!
