RA / Laser eye surgery / Methotrexate

I have suffered from RA with lupus overlap for the past 28 years. I have been taking methotrexate for the past 5 years and also get Rhituximab infusions twice a year. Is anyone in same situation and still had laser eye surgery?

I don't know if this post and comment thread on a similar topic might have some pointers for you? healthunlocked.com/nras/pos....

Might it be worth a chat with the NRAS Helpline?

Hi Izzy,

that is a tricky one. Never come across it on the NRAS helpline. I think the best people to ask are your rheumatology team or seek out an eye specialist.

I was denied lasik surgury. At first I passed all their tests and I actually paid in full, and was waiting in que to go into the surgical room. One by one, other patients who were scheduled went in before me. They wouldn't give me any information. After waiting four hours past my appt the surgeon called me in. He said that he will not give me lasik surgury. He showed me one of the scans they took a previous day, it showed heat (inflammation) sections of my eye and exaggerated astigmatism. It was the inflammation he was mostly concerned about, something about pressure in my eyes

The owner of the surgury came in and gave me all my money back and said "this is the first time this has ever happened"

Inflammation can cause your vision to change. So can many of the drugs we take, including steroids. As far as I knew, my only issue was astigmatism

The lasik surgury centre gives lifetime revisions, so if your vision changes they will operate again for free, so therefore they do not choose patients they know will need a revision.

In the end I'm so glad I didn't get it done. With glasses I can see, and I'm so thankful to have my sight. Who knows what complications with healing and revisions I would have had to deal with. I'm thankful the surgeon actually looked at all the tests....tests that other workers at the clinic actually passed me through as a good candidate.
