Hello.
I have now been put on sulfalasine 2000mg a day, I was wondering how long do the headaches and general malaise go on for?
I got to about that level of SSZ and started feeling like I had the absolute worst flu out. At first my GP told me to just keep going with it, but after another week with it not getting any better at all (and probably getting worse) I decided I just had to stop it. I thought it might be a hypersensitivity reaction, so started taking antihistamines to try and deal with the reaction. They did seem to work, but I did have to keep taking the antihistamine for a full two weeks (which interestingly is the length of time SSZ can stay in your system) before I felt right again. With the agreement of my doctor, I did try again with SSZ a few weeks later, starting at a much lower dose and intending to increase much slower, but within a few days I had reacted the same again, so gave it up completely.
Having said that, headaches are apparently a very common side effect, at least initially, or at any increase, that most people get over as they get used to it. There seems to be some evidence that going slower on increases can help reduce your sensitivity to it. You might want to ask if you can drop back to your previous dose for a while longer before you try increasing again if it really is bothering you.
Hi,
I had really bad headaches and dizzy spells for about 3-4 weeks on sulfalasine. I think it's just a side effect as you get used to them. I'm absolutely fine now. Hope you get better soon.
