Methotrexate.

Hi everyone, I have been on MTX tablets then injections now back on tablets and saw on my latest tablet container that I am to avoid all cola drinks! I have never heard that in all the years of being on MTX. Has anyone else ever heard of this. Thanks Heather x

Hi Jackal1963,

we have not heard of that before. Had a look for references on the internet but the only thing that we could find related to delayed elimination of high doses of methotrexate in a lymphoma patient. Be interested to see if anyone else has any more information on this.

Further to Beverley's reply above, we have also now checked with MEDAC, who manufacture Metoject Pens, and they are also not aware of it.

I have heard that we should avoid caffeine around the time we take our mtx, but I can not remember why. But my morning consists of about 5 cups of coffee every morning. Mtx day or not. I would love to hear anything on this as well

Hiya Heather. Another member questioned this a few weeks ago (first post under "Related Posts" to the right next to your post, you'll access it by clicking on it). It seems that it only applies to people on high doses of MTX, so not at the doses we take.

Hope this settles your mind.

I have been on MTX for about 3 years and cannot now tolerate Cola or Coffee both make me very nauseaous, I understand it is the caffine that may cause this reaction. I have heard of other people having this reaction.

very wise indeed! I wouldn't touch cola with mtx or any other time. Look what it does to a dirty 2 pence piece!

Yes but the reason it does this is because it's acidic and it has bubbles. Your stomach acid has a lower ph than coke meaning it's more acidic. If you were to swallow a 2 pence piece, it would come out very shiny too after it made its way through naturally. The same thing can be achieved by leaving a coin in vomit. Not that you would want to probably but the point stands. There are endless stories of people whose dogs have swallowed jewellery or coins and they have come out with a brilliant shine.

Never heard of this one - definitely alcohol but not fizzy drinks. I've been on methotrexate over 20 years. sorry can't help I would seek clarification from your rhumatologist

Don't touch the stuff, but I also avoid all fizzy drinks, even water. I can't remember the science, but I knew it once! It's to do with the fizz exacerbating inflammation.

As for the caffeine, I generally avoid it except for my morning mug of tea. The rest of the time I drink Redbush, though I might indulge in a decaf if I'm out.

My taste is certainly affected by drugs.
