I'm on mtx and hydroxy and on several occasions I've had terrible heartburn. I take omeprazole 4 hours after hydroxy so not sure whether it's just one of those things or a side effect of hydroxy. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Question : I'm on mtx and hydroxy and on several... - NRAS

Blood pressure several times went to 200/100 but that's because of the pain
Can't think of the tabs I take now as have fibro fog but go to your docs as the tablets can do this to you and it must be sorted as it is not good for you inside to be getting this ok do please please go It's the acid. Not good It's reflux I think
So sorry for you. It is excruciating
He will give you tabs to take that stop this. You need to take them
It's all the meds you are taking, not one specific med
When I see the meds tomorrow I can let you know what I take to stop it but go to the docs
He will sort it for you
Good luck
David
Thank you David for your reply. It isn't nice and I was up at 3am with it at its worst last night. I've had a few bouts now so I will ring my Rheumy nurse on Monday and see what she says about it.
Thanks again.
Andrea
Omeprazole 20mg are the tablets I get Same as helix helix
So go get them 😊
It's remarkably painful isn't it! So sympathy.
I had reflux before starting on the drugs, and the ones I take (MTX, Sulpha and Hydroxy) made it 50 times worse so I had to start taking stomach protectors otherwise life was a misery. Omeprazole suits me, and generally stops the heartburn/acid reflux - and I really feel it if I forget to take it. However, it seems that some people do better on one of the others, or need a double dose. So do talk to your GP or rheumy team.
Hello! Sorry to hear of your troubles with this. I'm in methatrexate and hydro too and I take lansoprazole at breakfast time and take my meth and hydro in the evening and luckily I haven't had any heartburn. Not sure what you've been advised but might be worth talking to your nurse about what time of day you take things. Good luck x
Hi just to say that that from time to time I get the odd bit of heartburn something which I've never suffered from in the past. Bit of a relief to read these comments about heartburn as it was a bit scary when I got it. I've been on Hydroxy / Naproxen been on Hydroxy for about 5 years now and not that long on Naproxen .
I take Omeprazole 20mg every morning with food. I started having awful problems (heartburn reflux etc) with diclofenac after years of no problems. I switched to Naproxen and taking Omeprazone and am ok. Now trying to go back to Diclofenac with the stomach protector as it worked better to keep down the inflammation. So far no problems but early days. Most of my meds are by injection.
Many of the medications we take for our conditions will upset the tummy lining so it is something you need to keep an eye on.
If the problem is persistent it is important you keep the first line health provider in the loop as this type of complaint if left can cause some very serious consequences. Especially if you are taking some forms of pain medication as well as DMARD drugs..
Keep the RA nurse informed and also your GP so they can treat this problem if and when required. Sometimes they also may change some of your medications to protect your tummy and bloods

That is very interesting . I am on same medication and also been having quite severe heartburn too. Am due for a telephone consult with ra nurse on Tuesday and am going to ask about that, will let you know
Just read your post and you say you take the omeprazole after you have taken your other tablets. My Dr told me to take my omeprazole first thing in the morning either with my other tablets or just before I took them. Might be a good idea to just clarify with your Dr to check when is best to take them. Good luck, hope it clears up for you.
It's recommended meds such as omeprazole are not taken within 4 hours of taking HCQ as it can diminish the effect of the HCQ but my Consultant didn't pay heed to that. When I was taking it & told me to take 200mg at the same time in the morning & as I was just on 20mg daily & to take the other 200mg HCQ in the evening as prescribed. Same applied for MTX, I took my 2 MTX tablets in the morning with my omeprazole & the other two doses at lunchtime & dinnertime & didn't suffer heartburn. Still do my MTX injection in the morning along with my other meds including omeprazole.
Always best to check with the prescriber though, your Rheumy in this instance.
As promised, an update on the query relating to heartburn with rheumy nurse today. She says that my heartburn is probably due to the fact that I have been on a steroid called Prednisolone and not connected to mtx or hydroxy as long as I take them at the correct time, which I do. Shall be off the steroids in a couple of weeks, so will be interesting if the heartburn goes away. Here`s hoping. Good luck with sorting yours out
They've told me to take omeprazole in the morning then space out my 2 hydroxy tabs if no better cut my one hydroxy out. So I'll see how it goes from there. Thank you everyone for your replies. X
