I had a different brand of hydroxy from a different chemist called Quinnine purple box.Normally it come in a white box with a green band on it.
Has anyoe else had issues with eyes and hydroxy, eye drop are only a temporary measure which doesnt last even though the box says otherwise

Hi Caroline. I was given several different brands of Hydroxy - I think you move on from the brand to the generic over time in order to save money and pharmacies are obliged to do this - might be wrong about this though maybe Ali Summer will tell us?
Re the dry eyes - this might go with the RA/ autoimmune thing and be the start of secondary Sjogrens as I have it too. You could ask your GP for preservative free eye drops which I find last longer and I get more relief from when I remember to use them. My optician recommended them. I don't think dry eyes are caused by the change in brand of Hydroxy but I could be wrong. I'm off Hydroxy now for other reasons but I still have dry eyes. Tilda x
HI it would/ could be an error?!! hydroxychloroquine is the weak dmard used for RA one common brand is plaquenil..
Quinine or more correctly quinine sulphate is used for cramp and not RA. THEY are NOT the same drug!!, both are not great for eyes, as in yearly eye test is recommended, neither have a licensed use for dry eyes?!!. you would be better with either viscotears or snow tear and if in doubt over eyes, first step is to see an optician!!

quite right- I was wrong, I was on Plaquenil but when we moved house all my meds seem to change to different brands.
Yes I have been for eye test and hospital appointment with eye doctor, who said my eyes are very dry.
I have sustain drops which actually dont do anything
The purple box version is Quinoric, not Quinine.....so exactly the same thing as the green box. Like Tilda, I got moved from Plaquinil to Quinoric as cheaper for the health trust to buy, as I found them nicer anyway as coated. But found them identical. I have problems with dry eyes, which depending on the day I blame on Sulpha, Hydroxy or just RA. So never step out the door without sunglasses as immediately painful if at all bright. I find that eye drops make no difference at all! (And yes I've seen optician...). Polly
My local pharmacy give me the plaquenil but Boots give the cheaper brand, i would try a few in your area and ask before you leave the prescription but probably most will use the cheaper one. If your doc make the prescription out for plaquenil you will get it. I think the cheaper ones have a terrible taste.
i have just been taken off hydroxy after1 1 weeks as they have damaged my eyes the optician picked up on this and have now been refered to hospital eye dept speak to your gp or nurse xxxxxx
Yes I have been in the same situation- i was given a complimentry photo of my eyes from Boots opticians. I was refered to the hospial who diagnosed dry eyes- as if I didnt know. xx
well thats it sorted! I
recommend viscotears or snow tears I USE viscotears xx, there are two new products on market too via scipt hylo tears and hylo forte tears, due to uniqe design, pump action and inbuilt one way filter these are ok to use for up to six months and still sterile other eye deops only have one month life ,
I use Lumecare Hypromellose Eye Drops which are preservative free at the advice of my optician. I just asked my GP for them on prescription. I like them and they sooth my eyes quite a lot. It sounds like it's probably nothing to do with the Hydroxy if you've seen an optician - more likely to be secondary Sjogrens which goes with RA for many of us sadly. Tilda x
