HI Guys, i have totally lost count to how many times I have tried to quit now but I am back trying again - this is day five and i am struggling a bit I need some words of wisdom please I fully understand why I dont want to smoke but I dont understand why I do want to smoke hope that makes sense! Does anyone know of a good reason to smoke or why people smoke!? Its like if I find a good reason then I can justify having one just cant find a reason and something in my brain is telling me there must be one otherwise why da hell did I smoke every day for over ten years!!!????

  • there is no good reason to smoke, we just make excuses so that we can. We don't want to go through withdrawal, it can be quite uncomfortable(trying not to scare the newbies:eek: ). Its in the phrase giving up smoking, we immediately feel that we are missing out. Smoking has been a huge part of my life for 29 years and I miss it, but I know it's sooooo bad I just have to end the relationship. I wouldn't stay with a man who was trying to kill me, so why do I want a relationship with ciggies when that's what they are doing. Just keep on trying, you will succeed

  • Hi Kelu

I can only tell what has caused me to fail:

    1. Didn't make it past the physical nicotine addiction(roughly three days).

    2. Didn't make it past the very strong psychological addiction(for me inside 3 weeks).

    3. Felt I was no longer addicted and could therefor have a cigarette without becoming a smoker again(two to three months).

The last one is the funniest, and I'm sure some of you will actually laugh out loud.:)

Kelu, we are the same as alcoholics; we can just never smoke again. But let us not forget that the rewards are stupendous and we are all familiar with them.

    Hope this helps a little.

  • Kelu - the ONLY reason you smoked every day for 10 years was because you are addicted to the drug in the cigarettes, NICTOTINE. You, me, Shojam, and everyone else on this forum is a junkie  and our brain tells us it's OK to want a cigarette because then we get our junkie fix.

Only one day we wake up and decide that actually we don't want to do this to ourselves anymore. We want to be healthy, smell nice, have white teeth, more money in our pockets - basically we want to break our addiction. Only it's not easy is it? Because after a few days of starving ourselves of Nicotine it starts playing with our minds - telling us that it would be OK to have one, that once you have one you'll feel so much better, whispering and gnawing away at you.

So you have 2 choices - you give in the the Nicodemon, give him what he wants and carry on being a junkie OR maybe this time you can actually tell Mr. Nicodemon to f&%k off for good........

Which way are you going to go????

  • Hi you smoked because you wanted to at first, and then you smoked because you couldn’t give up, simple as that.

Tough love says if you want to smoke no one can stop you without locking you up, but deep down you don’t want to smoke or you wouldn’t be on here asking for help.

No one on this site can stop you, but by you meeting us half way we can be hear for you listening to your rants letting you know you are not alone, and trying to make you feel better when things get bad which they do, but also they get better as I can vouch for.

I hated more than anything giving up smoking but eventually the will to be a non smoker overtook the craves and now I can’t say I never crave for a cig it’s just that I turn my back on it and decide I am not going to, it can be done else there would be no long term quitters on this site, would there.

I send you good wishes and hope that you can in time get your head round why you need to quit and that you really want too xx

  • hi kelu

keep stopped its hard I know.

I am into my 4th stop, 6 months nto it.

the reasons I have gone back to smoking have been "just 1"

there is never just 1 like peter said its like being an alcoholic for some of us, all or nothing. there are some people who can have the odd drink, odd cig odd chocolate odd gamble but others cant and have to abstane. I am glad I dont like gambling and chocolate lol the drink well i need some pleasure. seriously keep thining about all the benifits of not smoking they far out weigh the benifits of smoking.

    good luck

    sue

  • Hi kelu

    5 days i great

Dont mean to sound awful but do you honestly not know why we want to smoke? nicotine..cravings ? ...like a fight for & against all the way I suppose .....we dont want to smoke probably as much as we do want to smoke.......We just get better at the quit along the way. So the wanting fades ....but is always there probably forever...........

Cant believe you dont know all this already?:)

good luck nearly day 6 keep posting xxx

  • Hi -nice to meet you:)

I wont even begin to tell you how many quits I have had-hugely embarrassing.

But what I can tell you is this

this quit I felt very different because I read loads of the signatures here and other info on net about addiction.repeatedly-every day.

It finally sunk in I can never , ever have just one cig. never again.

but the thought of that is too huge -so I just say not today.

also I am boring everybody rigid on this forum by logging on and posting when a crave hits:o:o

you will do it -you know you will . good luck . read and read again!!

    xx

    Hi Kelu

lots of people have tried many many times before but you will get there keep on trying if at first you dont succeed as the saying goes ......why do you want to smoke your'e asking ? well can only say i wanted to smoke to be like my mates ...then it became a drug and i wanted more and more, thats why we want to smoke and to be honest i liked it for the twenty odd years until i suddenly woke up to the fact that yes it does kill you and i was no exception and thats why i dont smoke anymore and finally after nearly 10 months of quit ..i know that feeling of wanting to smoke has gone forever ...keep trying to quit as many times as it takes you it doesn't matter as you will get there one day and you will have answered your own question.:)
