Hi there

I am new here and I was reading some of the successful members...I really need all the help I can get!!!

I have been smoking since the age of 14, and I am now 27 and I have had enough. The quantity of cigarettes I smoke has increased dramaticaly in the last year and I now smoke 20-40 cigarettes at day; It really depends on how much stress I'm dealing with.

I am studying architecture and I am currently in my last year of studies (with only few months left) and I am so scared to underperform if all I can think is cigarettes!!!

I have tried everything:NHS support + champix, NRT (all of them), electronic cigarettes, hypnosis cd (at home), I have almost every book to stop smoking on the market and I have tried to scare myself with pics and info regarding diseases and illness......but NOTHING has worked.

The longest time I have managed to quit was for 70 hours.Last week I tried twice and I made it about half day!!!

I am not sure what to do and I would be very grateful to anybody who would be able to post some advice.

Thank you

Hi there,

It seems to me that youre not in the right place mentally for a quit to work at the moment, if youre in your final year is ths the best time to get your head round all you need for a successful quit ? I wonder whether you should set a quit date after finals but in the meantime read on this site and prepare yourself for THE FINAL QUIT just a thought.

This forum is brilliant, sugest you read all the posts and signatures to prepare yourself

Hi Zai and welcome to the forum. Firstly well done on making the choice to stop smoking it is one of the best choices you will ever make and never ever regret.

It sounds like you are a really clever person, studying architecure and all that, so you know all the down sides to smoking, but as Allan Carr said it is not the down sides to smoking that keep us smoking.

It really is a head thing, once you have done 72 hours cold turkey the nicotine is out of your body and you just have to deal with the little monster in your head.

It sounds like you are saying that this is not a good time to quit, because you have the last few months of the course to go, but lets face it there is never a good time to stop, so make the decision and stick to it, pick a day and make that your day 1.

Many of us here have tried several times to quit, I myself stopped counting how many times I had done a day or 2 days, but I have now done over 4 months.

There are many links attached to the signitures around here, so read, read and then read some more, this will really help with the mental side of the addiction. Post often there will always be someone around to offer advice or just listen to a moan.

Everybody here is in the same boat, we all know how you are feeling, you will find lots of support, and hopefully lots of friends.

Please post often and let us know how it is going.

Thank you for both of your replies..

Yes, it's true that is neve a good time to quit.My problem is definatelly my mind!!!

Stopping smoking in the past reduced me to tears...which is not normal for me!I am starting to think that I am finding quitting hard because I am scared to re-live what I went through before...

thank you.

I have been reading so many threads on this forum and many success stories.

I think this kind of support is what I really need..people who understand what I am going (or will be going) through while quitting.

Don't give up giving up

Hi,

I'm now in my 17th day of quitting this time around. I don't know what's different for me this time but the one thing I can say is that you do have to be in the right frame of mind to quit. Don't make the mistake of blaming outside factors such as personal stress levels for possibly not succeeding - I've got a lot of stuff going on in my life right now, but it has not made want to smoke. All I can say is to come back to the forum each time you are tempted, and read all the great advice on here. It has helped me, and you will not interact with a more genuine group of people either on the net or elsewhere. Everybody here has a common aim - A Smoke Free Life.

Dont give up giving up, and keep coming back for advice.

Good Luck:)

Don't under perform

Hi there

Read Allen Carr's EASY WAY!!!!

I totally understand your situation...I have recently broken free and am not going back to the nicotine trap... I am an artist and I used to love being me and paint and draw every hour I could... I am now about to start being an artist again after 14 years...I was recently published but due to the fags have had a lack of confidence... I look through my old sketch books and can't believe how good I was. I put my lack of inspiration and confidence down to cigarettes...It's a fact as I started smoking about 12 years ago... I'm 36 and born again.

The best thing I have come accross is Allen Carr's EASY WAY... Can't say enough about it! Read it and set yourself free. Do it for you...:)

I also set up a group to share inspirational music...post something to help us all through...

Hi defrog,

I have the Easy way book, cd and dvd..unfortunately this method has not worked for me..When I purchased these I was looking forward to stop as many people had thanks to Allen Carr...I am not sure why this didn't work for me.

Congratulations on getting published, it must feel great :).I agree with the fact that cigarettes make you confidence go down hill..I think they are doing that to me too.

Allen Carr got me to understand what smoking was... The thing that got me to put out the last cigarette and know I wouldn't smoke again was facing up to the Real Life Horrors... After a few years of stoping and starting I finally went onto the ASH website and looked at some real horror stories and realised Life is better than smoking...

I do find this website great...but I would love a live chat room to dive into and chat. I might set one up! Cup of tea and a chat room and the hours will fly by :)

Stay with us and we can all do it together...Cry, shout, get mad it's all better than smoking...

What music do you listen to when it's hard?

I like R.E.M quite a lot, but I like all good music really.

The chat room idea is great. Please let me know if you'll set one up.
