Hi everyone I've been doing some research about magnesium (my doc recommended some as I seem to show some signs of deficiency) I wondered about my recent quit and how smoking may have affected my magnesium levels.... as many of you I have been irritable and moody and things are seeming to calm for me since I started taking a magnesium supplement. Sleeping better as well..... I read this somewhere:
Magnesium: If you smoke, you may be a special candidate for magnesium deficiency. Smoking causes stress that in turn causes blood cholesterol levels to rise and magnesium levels to fall.
From what I read because of processed food/poor nutrition, most people suffer from magnesium deficiency but are unaware..... it's one of those few supplement that when you take it you actually feel you took it..... I figure the smoking depletes it extra and magnesium is a naturally calming mineral so many of our early quitters may benefit from it? Not sure of course but it's a pretty cheap supplement.... so worth a try???
Thanks for that info I thought it interesting, but wonder why the Docs don't tell us about it
Maybe because selling us prescription drugs is way more profitable!!! Magnesium relaxes...... but companies selling sleeping pills, antidepressants wouldn't want people to know about 'cheap' alternatives..... it is a well known fact that pharmaceutical companies pay doc's VERY well..... some docs even get vacations out of it!!!
Very wary nowadays. "Snake oil" for those that want it - is my attitude to the vast majority of it .. but if you say it works - that's good enough for me ...
Had to look up 'snake oil'.... still learning English it seems I agree by the way..... everything you see stacked on shelves in drug stores these days is crap trying to get your attention with shiny labels and false promises...... I have never seen so many wrinkle creams in my life!!! May be extra bad here in the US
If you want to try the Magnesium get it in citrate form (better absorbed).... my naturopath told me to take 400 mg (Calcium/magnesium are often sold together) Mabye we're going to be all calm and happy.... the real test would be to invite 'Iquitjan..' dude back and see how well we do..... Or maybe NOT
Thanks for this info, I think I might get some magnesium supplements, my husband can't sleep properly since giving up 6 months ago and we both feel really fed up and stressed since we packed in, we're actually waiting to feel some benefits of giving up apart from the financial one.
Pumpkin seeds are an excellent snack or addition to salads etc They are in Zinc, calcium and magnesium but be aware upping zinc consumption is reputed to boost the libido :cool:
Just to add that magnesium is the main ingredient in many 'calmers' used for horses. A lot of horses get stressed when travelling, competing, vets visits etc so you can buy calmers to put in their feed. These are often magnesium based and they do work so I'm sure there is a lot of truth in the power of magnesium!
