#2 My health

#3 Money

I only really have 1 reason...

My 2 1/2 year old son. I lost my father to smoking related stuff when I was 12 (or maybe I was just 13). He never got to see me grow up, and I never knew whether he would be proud of the way I turned out.

I am absolutely determined that the same thing will not happen a generation further on due to the evil of tobacco. It ends HERE.

So...

Thats actually 2 reasons...

1) My son

2) My health

nsd_user663_3845

1. Health - I was diagnosed type 1 diabetic 4 years ago and smoking has all the same effects on health as diabetes.

2. Kids - I've a son af 16 and a daughter of 18 and I really want to be around if they need me for anything. I remeber telling a guy that if I was ever told I was dying because of smoking the worst part would be having to tell my kids and just the feeling that you'd robbed them of having a Dad just so you could smoke fags, that would annoy me more than knowing my time was up

I suppose that's really health again.

3. Money - I was just saying to my son the other day that what me and his mum had spent on fags while he was growing up would've treated us all to a nice holiday every year.

In no particular order

1. Health

2. Kids

3. I had actually stopped enjoying smoking

1 my health

2 to see my great grand daughter grow to be a teenager

3 like john said money ,what we have spent on fags, well say no more about that,,keep the faith tony

[*]Definately health - sick of feeling like a wheezy old man at the age of 36. Plus my dad died of lung cancer aged 50 and over the last couple of years I've started to become conscious that 50 isn't such a long way off anymore!

[*]My little boy. Since becoming a single parent I realised I needed to become a lot more responsible!!

[*]I stopped enjoying smoking a long time ago

It seems like we all pretty much have the same reasons!

nsd_user663_3728

1/ Health I came close to meeting my maker in April 08 makes you think

2/ Money being forced to retire couldn't afford

3/For me

Stuart you were just 13 when your Dad died.He was very proud of you while alive and trust me on this I know he would be even prouder of you now Mum

nsd_user663_1733 profile image
nsd_user663_1733

Yes Stu i think he would be proud of you i would if you was my son.

1. money

2 Kids & grand kids

3 Health

nsd_user663_3810 profile image
nsd_user663_3810

and stu's dad would be proud of you too Margareth xxxx

my reasons

1. sick of going 'out of my way' for a fag-slavery to the addiction

2. My dad-also died (aged 56) from smoke related illness and witnessed the total devastation of my family because of it and wouldnt want to put them through it again.

3.stopped enjoying it-mainly the smell

nsd_user663_3832 profile image
nsd_user663_3832

My reasons are kind of simple:

1 I want to jog

2 I want to be able to enjoy a coffe without the fag (soon moving back to a country where it is not allowed to smoke inside, so I wanted to be prepared)

3 I want to be FREE!!!

nsd_user663_3910 profile image
nsd_user663_3910

1.Health, couldn't bear the thought of getting an illness that could be related to smoking, whilst still smoking.

2. Didn't want my children thinking it was OK to smoke, difficult to tell them how awful it is when you're doing it.

3. Fed up of feeling like a leper, popping out of the pub, building, making sure the smoke isn't blowing into anyones face and just feeling ashamed.

nsd_user663_3822 profile image
nsd_user663_3822

My quit smoking reasons are

1 Health

2 Money

3 Embarassment,I was the only smoker in the house and the second last in my work place to give up.

On day 25 and except for a few urges doing great.

nsd_user663_3816 profile image
nsd_user663_3816

1. Children - I want to be around to see them grow up and be around for their children.

2. Health - As my lungs have took a battering for far to long. Its time i stopped polluting them.

3.Money - Burnt far to much money over the years, they are not having no more thats for sure.

nsd_user663_3856 profile image
nsd_user663_3856

mine are the usually, excpet the last one...

My kids, I dont want to mess up their health... or not be around because I end up with a form of cancer caused by smoking.

Money, god only knows how I ever afforded it!!!

and finally... watching my mum go through her cancer treatment over the last 8 months, the Chemo in particular... A) its absolutely hideous... B) I can avoid that ...C) how insulting is it to my mum to be fighting for her life while I'm potentially throwing mine away, and for what!!!

watching someone very close go through cancer is extremely sobering... We are lucky that mum has had a fantastic result from her chemo and is now in remission :)

nsd_user663_3956 profile image
nsd_user663_3956

Why I Quit

(1) Health - I got real worried about this especially as I have (had) been smoking for over 40 years (2) Vanity - yes I am being truthfull - my teeth starting to disintigrate, my mouth was (still is!!) all wrinkly - YUK - I smelt awfull and I knew the time had come because I became very self concious of smelling of smoke - Why it took me over 40 years to figure all this out I don't know.

That's 1,2 & 3.

nsd_user663_3849 profile image

1.I want to get to retirement age and be fit enough to enjoy retirement.

2.Money - I literally can't afford to smoke AND keep my horse - I had to choose one!

3. Out of respect to my dear friend Anne who died on Christmas day aged 32. She didn't smoke, she had no choice with her cancer - I DO have a choice.

Every time I lit a cigarette I felt guilty

The cost - I'm now on a four day week with a 20% cut in salary as is my husband. My "habit" was costing over £100 a month.

Fed up of feeling like a social pariah huddled in a corner having a quick fag.

Conclusion

Well after reading the answers, I think we're all pretty similar in our goal, there are 4 x main reasons, in no order:

1. We all want to be healthier in all aspects of life

2. We all want to be there for our families...for a long time

3. We all want more money in our pockets!

4. We don't want to be seen as smokers anymore (good word Biddy...pariah)!

Reading that, I wonder why any of us ever smoked....Wierd isn't it? As all the reasons are hugely important reasons and main aspects of our lives, family? health? Definitely keep up the good work everyone :)

Hi there

You wonder why on reading these posts any of us ever started

I can't answer for anyone else, but when I started over 50 years ago it was the in thing to do.

If you didn't smoke you were looked on as to put it mildly peculiar and as almost everyone smoked as a matter of course not as an outcast like today

Oh my how times have changed and they say everything goes in circles i hope this is one habit that doesn't

Best wishes to all

Margaret

I basically Quit to see if I could and my goal was one year.

I made that goal and beyond still cant say I wont ever smoke again.

The benifits of not smoking has not came to me yet and I am becoming Impatient.I have a full series of medical test tuesday to see if I have something else wrong with me and I will go from there.

In a wierd kind of way, I hope they find something with the tests Dubbs... it would be horrible for me to see a quitter who I find inspirational gain nothing from it from a health point of view.

While I would never wish ill health on anyone, I hope you understand what I mean.

1. Health

2. Family

3. Unsociability (unsocialness - I don't know what the word is)

If money ever was a reason for quitting it sure isn't anymore. I reckon I've spent twice (three/four times) the amount on treats that "I'd have spent on cigarettes anyway".

I know what you mean Stu and agree, when you know there's something not right it can be a relief to find out what's wrong, I was certainly relieved when I was diagnosed with diabetes as I had felt rubbish for a long time before.

Good luck anyway Dubbs.

3. Looks....Don't want horrid skin and that voice that smokers get :(

My 3 reasons:

1. Health, was having difficulty climbing stairs, etc. No breath.

2. Grandchildern, want to see them graduate college.

3. Money. When I heard on news that they were planning to add a $2.00 tax per pack I knew I couldn't afford. Wanted my quit to be done before I was forced to do it. Probably wouldn't have been able to quit if I was forced cause I'm too stuborn, lol.
