God this is difficult...

I stopped taking Champix a couple of days before Christmas. Did not suddenly decide to, just kept forgetting to take tablets! I still have a full pack in the cupboard, and not sure if I should start taking them again.

I am getting such strong cravings, especially late afternoon and evening. Yes they do go (eventually), but I hate that horrible feeling that I get.

Will have a glass of wine and some stilton to take my mind off it :o

Hi Clare. what Buffy says is very true. There are lots of posts on here regarding the stopping of Champix. If l were you, l would make an appointment with your doctor, to see how best to go, coming of Champix.

Thanks for all your encouragement - I need it!!!

I had been smoking for almost 20 years, up to 20 a day, for all my adult life. I smoked my last cig at 0700 on 16th October 2007.

I feel fitter, been managing to go to the gym, weigh about half a stone more than I did three months ago :o

I have been using the Quit Clinic at the local Tesco pharmacy, but when I go for a repeat prescription they do not seem to bother to chat or ask me how I am doing. I have tried asking them questions (like why have I got a metallic taste in my mouth all the time) but they do not seem interested. That is why I just stopped taking the Champix I suppose, but I will go back tomorrow.

And yes ... wine and cheese is lovely, and I do not need to go outside for it!

How long did you take them for clare and what dosage were you on?

I started on the low dose then went onto 1mg twice a day. I ended up only taking about one a day as I kept forgetting. I work shifts, and eat at strange times, so it was hard getting into a routine.

Thanks Josie, you too. I started smoking at about 15 or 16 years young, and smoked every day for the next 20 years... even when I was admitted to hospital on traction for a week when I was 18 I still smoked in the day room!!

I never really wanted to give up smoking until the day I actually decided to, and I still do not know the deciding factor for me. I had a great dislike for 'smug ex-smokers' who would say how easy it is, how much better you feel etc etc, and when I saw an advert on TV for NRT I would go straight outside and light up!!

Apart from all that, I cannot believe how well I have done, very proud of myself and do not want to start smoking again. At all.

ps - strangest thing for me was when I thought my pillow smelt funny in a morning. Realised it smelt of shampoo and hairspray and not Lambert and Butler!!

HI CLARE,

I WAS TAKING CHAMPIX AND I BECAME A NON SMOKER :D ON THE 20 OCTOBER. I HAD CUT DOWN TO HALF OF 1MG EVERY OTHER DAY AS I WAS DEALING WITH IT ALL REALLY WELL AND MY SMOKING CESSATION SAID IT WAS OK TO DO THIS. I STOPPED TAKING IT JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS MAINLY BECAUSE I KEPT FORGETTING TO TAKE IT AND DECIDED IT MAY NOT DO ME ANY GOOD IF I WAS JUST TAKING IT HERE AND THERE. I HAVE FOUND SINCE I STOPPED THE TABS THAT I HAVE QUITE STRONG CRAVINGS TO SMOKE AGAIN. ITS THE STRANGEST THING ISNT IT. YOU DONT HAVE ANY REAL DESIRE FOR A FAG FOR WEEKS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY COME BACK... JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW BAD THAT NIC DEMON IS  THE THING THAT HAS STOPPED ME FROM GOING AND BUYING A PACK IS THE THOUGHT OF HAVING TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK AND STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!! YOU HAVE DO SO BRILLIANTLY, DONT GIVE IN NOW. DONT GO BACK TO TESCOS, GO AND SEE YOUR GP, I THINK MOST SURGERIES NOW HAVE SMOKING CESSATION NURSES AS WELL... THEY ARE REALLY HELPFUL AND WILL GIVE YOU ALL THE ADVICE YOU NEED....

OH, AND NEXT TIME THAT LITTLE NIC CHAP COMES TO VISIT TELL HIM TO SOD OFF AND SLAM THE DOOR IN HIS FACE :p :D

Hiyah all

Just to share my experience of coming off Champix.

I 'forgot' to take them and so ended the course with a full 2 weeks supply left but I had been taking only 1mg per day (forgetfulness again) which meant Id been on it about 5 months.

I had really bad feelings of anxiety, feeling tearful/low, almost black moods - same as I had when I started it. I havent smoked now since 3rd July and although it took 2 or 3 weeks, cravings and black moods have now all gone. I do wish I'd weaned myself off rather than just stopping. If I had my chance again I would have gone back to the GP and asked for a reduced dose over a month or so.

However main point has been acheived - not smoking at all.

when you do get to the gym you'll be so pleased with how much easier it is!

I was using the gym as a way to avoid the cravings in the evenings when I first quit and got superfit over those first few weeks!!!

I have tried asking them questions (like why have I got a metallic taste in my mouth all the time)

I read that and found it really freaky, I've had a very similar sensation in the past 2 days, no cravings at all, but a metallic taste especially in the morning or after drinking water.

I'm not on Champix so don't think its related , but how freaky that you have described the taste I've been trying to put my finger on all day. Rather like sucking on 2 pence pieces!

Thank you all so much for your support. It really does help.

I went back to Tesco pharmacy yesterday to have a chat with the advisor there, but shock horror she was not working again. I spoke to the pharmacist who was lovely, but admitted he did not know about the side effects of Champix, and promised he would get the advisor to phone me back yesterday. Still waiting for the call........

Anyway, I went to the gym and I am so chuffed with myself about the amount I can do now. I ache like crazy, but it takes my mind off the fags!

It is so strange how we are all having similar experiences. Gary, I know this may sound like a daft question but when you had the metallic taste, were your gums bleeding at all? The reason I ask this, a friend told me that when you smoke all the nicotene mixes in with any plaque, and settles at the top of your teeth and gums. Then when you stop smoking there is no more nicotene, so your gums go into shock mode and therefore you can get bleeding when cleaning your teeth, therefore the metallic taste. Dont know how true this is but I like having reasons for everything!

I dont want to bother my doctor about the Champix, I feel that it is all my fault anyway for starting smoking in the first place so I should not take up anyone else's appointment. Bloody Tesco pharmacy - would go there again but it costs me a fortune. Dont you know its rude not to buy anything when you go to Tesco? Also I get trolley rage. Not good for everyone else's ankles.

Take care all, and stay positive xx

I'm not sure , but my gums don't bleed - they do bleed a little when I brush, but I put that down to brushing more (enjoying seeing whiter teeth & pinker tounge due to lack of tobacco stains).

So maybe there's your reason. I can say the taste is a little stronger today though and I haven't brushed yet !:eek: (I just got up at 3pm, working nights)
