I have read allan carr several times in the past and also just about every stop smoking book published. that's no exageration either .I'm a librarian and get free access to just about every book in the UK! The recurring point I read in every book was that a cig doesn't cause you to have good feelings rather it replaces the bad feeling the cig b4 created in the first place. I admit although I read this I didn't fully grasp the concept.........That was until this morning when I stupidly knocked my hand on my oven grill (don't ask! lol) Anyway I put some of this burn cream stuff on and it felt ok-not super duper special but 'normal' like my other hand. This creams effects only last about 2 hrs so I've had to keep repplying it all day. It was then I made the connection. Nicotine had taken something from me (normally released dopamine or 'happy feelings') a bit like the grill plate took a bit of healthy skin away so I had to smoke another to feel what non smokers feel all the time - just like I had to keep applying the burn cream - so my hand would feel 'normal' like the other! I've been trying to understand 4 years. At last!

Hi, yes, Kazza, I too got confused especially the "delayed reaction to the last cigarette" as Neil Casey describes in The Nicotine Trick. Being female, have to see it as a picture. I imagine me walking along a line in a cartoon. Theline runs across the TV screen from left to right. I smoke a ciggy. I carry on walking but start to travel downhill, below the line. So I smoke another and quickly move uphill to join the original line (normality). A short while later I am walking below the line. I have to smoke another to keep on the line of feeling normal and so on. Cigarettes do not make us feel better - they just prevent us feeling normal - every time we are NOT smoking. Quit and I walk below the line a little further but then gradually travel back up to the line - which I walk along FOR EVER.
Oh, Kazza, hopefully! I'm on day 5 and very emotional. And even puzzling out the ciggy before business doesn't help much. And neither does trying to smoke this bread stick!!! Ahhhh!
Just got in from work (early finish 2day)
