Living donor post op issues

My daughter donated a kidney 9 months ago and has experienced changes since the surgery. She’s having a lot of bloating and changes to her bowel function. I’m wondering if anyone else who is in touch with their donor has heard of any specific changes since the surgery?

Hi there. I wass part of a paired donor chain, starting with my cousin donating to a stranger. Iy has been 2 years now and she has only recently fully recovered. It took a lot longer for both of us, as donor and recipient, than we were led to believe. Tell your daughter to hang in there. Most likely things will even out in the end. X

Transplant centers are required to do followups on living donors, who indeed are heros, at 6-, 12- and 24-months after transplant. Your daughter should contact the transplant center to seek advice.

I was a donor, and I did have some bloating and bowl issues the first few weeks after surgery. The discomfort lasted about 4 weeks and it eventually went away. I was told by our transplant center that it was pretty common to have this reaction after having had a laparoscopic procedure. I was 45 at the time I donated my kidney and in 6 weeks I was completely recovered. I would definitely check with the transplant center, in my case, I was monitored by them for a year post donation and was told I could contact them beyond that as well if I had any issues related to the kidney donation. Hope this helps!

Depending on what kind of issues she is having it could be her gallbladder. So let thw center know how she is feeling and get things checked out. I am not a donor but I did ask my donor and he said no issues but he said check the gallbladder too.
