My favorite person (husband) has been admitted to the hospital for an infection. He suddenly developed chills, nausea and vomiting and a fever of 103. The chills went away, but the fever was enough to go to the hospital. All of his labs look normal. He’s on IV antibiotics. His fever is back down and he’s asymptomatic other than a high heart rate. Doctors want to keep him for observation and see if his bloodwork cultures since right now, they don’t know the source of the infection. Has anyone dealt with this before? What was the outcome?
infection : My favorite person (husband... - Kidney Transplant
infection
also, his wbc is slightly elevated, so clearly something’s going on.
I am so sorry that he caught something. It is good that they keep him in the hospital for observation while repeating culture for culprit. Healing dusts sent your way!
Hello Sugabear! I am sorry to hear that your husband is in hospital. Sometimes it takes time for bloodwork to reveal the nature of the problem, as I have discovered in my own experience. There are viruses that live within the body that don't become a problem until one is immunosuppressed. Perhaps this is the situation. Doctors will get a handle on it, I am sure. I will keep you and your husband in prayer. I wish him a speedy recovery.☺
After my transplant I had many infections that I had never had before from sinus to uti. Had to take different antibiotics for all. My major concern was to make sure it did not turn into sepsis since the antibiotic helped, I would assume that he is going to get better quickly. In my case, being proactive is the best option. Your own body produces possible infections that in that when present in other parts produces negative results. Note I also experienced food poisoning from a restaurant due to poor health standards. So the saying cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to your health. Just washing your hands can save your life and others. Other than that, create a Cadre of doctors to rely on. Not every doctor has all the answers. When I had normal health I rarely went to a doctor. But now, I rely on many from kidney to urologist and from thyroid to heart. Thank God for medicare. I still go to my gp but he acts as a coordinator. Staying somewhat functional has become a part time job. I guess my advice is that this will pass and trying to find answers will lead to more questions. So trust in your gut and the advice of the doctors. You send your love one have reached a new turn in your lives. You are fortunate to have each other.
Yes, about 3 weeks after my transplant I was back in the transplant center hospital with a fever. I wound up being there for almost 2 weeks. I had every test "under the sun" and never did find out the cause, except an elevated white count. Did think it was probably a virus. Was on IV antibiotics and just got better.
I am now over 23 years post-transplant and doing fantastic!
Just checking in to see how your husband is doing?
He’s doing much better, thanks for asking. I’m not thrilled about what actually put him in the hospital, but his kidney function is completely normal and was not impacted by the infection. It’s a reminder that the transplant recipients are so much more susceptible to illness.
What labs has he had.Has he been tested for CPO ,my symtoms were like that yet they couldnt pin down where infectiion coming from so just kept giving iv antibiotics till cpo culture came back negative
