Weight gain?

I received a transplant 1 month ago. I was never on dialysis, close but I never had to undergo that phase, thankfully. I lost approximately 20 lbs. post transplant, mostly water weight according to doctors. I’m undergoing labs every 3-4 days and my numbers are good. BP is good. My only concern is I’m very thin, haven’t gained a pound. Doctors have told me weight gain will happen. My question is when can I expect weight gain or what can I do to gain weight? I’m type 1 diabetic and take very good care of myself. Well controlled.

I’m 3 months post transplant myself. I normally have trouble maintaining a low enough healthy weight, especially on prednisone. My weight stayed very stable up until the holidays, when I put on about 5 pounds. I know that my appetite for the first 2 weeks was a little low and I had to remind myself to eat. But it came back pretty quick. It seems a big part of this journey is finding the right balance for you. I worked with my dietician and pharmacists to build a plan for getting the nutrition I needed. The hard part was finding the right types of food to meet those goals. My first month I had to stay near the hospital (I live a long way from any transplant center). So we were in a hotel eating at restaurants. Some nutrients were easy (protein was readily available), others were harder (nutrient rich vegetables that are not raw seemed to be either broccoli or peas, I like both but not for every meal every day). Once I got home I thought that it would be easier. It is, but still struggle getting all the boxes checked off.

My brother has gained at least 40 pounds since he received my kidney 2 years ago. Initially, the weight gain was probably due to the Prednisone, but that was stopped 2-3 months after transplant and he continued to gain weight. He is morbidly obese now weighing 245 lbs at 5' 3". I think he just feels better and eats more since the transplant. He was on dialysis for 2 years before the transplant. Are you still on Prednisone?
