I had BK virus about 10 months after my transplant. The doctors stopped my cellcept and added Prednisone, so my immune system could rev up some. I did testing every week, and the virus level dropped some every week. Took about 2 months for it to be gone. Went back to the usual meds, and BK has not come back. I don't know what 'next step' they would use if that did not work. Good luck.
I also got the polyoma BK virus about 1.5 years after my kidney transplant. My nephrologist changed my meds by switching the mycophenalate to 60mg of leuflunamide. I've been going for blood work every two to four weeks to check my leuflunamide levels and the polyoma virus. The virus has dropped significantly. There is no magic pill to cure the polyoma virus but I have been told that leuflunamide is the preferred treatment.
You didn't mention the level of the virus. Perhaps it is so low and your doc is taking a wait and see attitude before switching meds.
