Roughly how long was you waiting for you're transplant?

Currently waiting for hospital to be in touch regarding operation dates for myself and my brother. I know they only discuss on a Monday, and with the past few Bank holidays they will be behind. But it feels like I've been waiting ages but don't want to ring up and be annoying and asking if this a normal wait time.

(its been about 8 weeks since I passed all the tests)

I had my transplant in Oct. 1999. Mine was from a deceased donor and was on the list waiting for 14 months. I know today, depending on the transplant center you could be waiting 3-5-7 years.Your living donor transplant should be done in the next month or two.

Best of luck !

Dear PartyPigeon,

I can't say for 'Now', ie with Covid still around, but I was Transplanted in July 2013- after, almost exactly Four Years..... I started Dialysis in June/ July 2009.

I am in Britain and our 'Average Wait', again pre Covid, was 2-5 years.... again that might, very well, have changed anyway. (There is now a System of 'assumed concent', meaning far more Kidneys are Available- along with Advances in 'Keeping Kidneys Viable' longer.)

I know, just how Hard 'all the waiting is' babe, but you DO have to, I'm afraid. I know that

Sixteen years in waiting list. Probably, mine was one of the longest in the USA. I was put in waiting list in 2006 with 23% GFR. The hospital surgeon wanted me in a pre-emptive transplant and we refused it ,and changed hospital. I had an excellent independent pediatric nephrologist that kept my kidneys lasting longer, GFR was around 14% in 2017. Still as non-active at the waiting list, but accumulating time. Then at 21 yro, I could not continue as pediatric patient and had to move to an adult nephrologist associated to a hospital where I got the transplant. My GFR decreased gradually to 8% pre-transplant, but was feeling ok and no dialysis required. Unfortunately could not get a live donor. A good deceased donor offer came and was transplanted in February 2022. Too many complications post-transplant. Still not sure if the transplant was the right decision for me or had bad luck with the wrong doctors. Be sure that ALL the surgery team is experienced and have a good track record.
