I’m new here just got my transplant three weeks ago, after 5 years of waiting. I have gained some weight and I want to try to control it. Is plant based diet good for the transplant? I really want to hear your experiences and any advice would be highly appreciated.
Thank you guys!

Most transplant centers have dietitians on staff. Please contact your transplant center and ask for a referral for a dietitian who can best advise you about your diet. You may have some other underlying issues other than the transplant that may require special dietary needs. Best wishes!
Hi Tuna14. Congratulations! I am also trying to be healthy after a recent transplant and have joined Second Nature. I don't know the answer to your question but I would think that as long as you're not overdoing the potassium and making sure you get enough phosphate and calcium it should be fine. Have you asked at your doc at transplant clinic?
Hi Post-Op-Jogger, thanks for your reply. I actually spoke to my transplant clinic and they will refer me to dietitian but it's a awaiting list and I want to start eating healthy immediately and I just believe Plant based diet is a healthy diet. So I wanted to see other people experiences and learn from it.
I had my kidney transplant 2 1/2 ago. My sugar has slowly rise due to prednisone. Since I’m prediabetes now, my doctor suggested to eat low carb, whole food plant based diet or pescatarian diet. I selected pescatarian or Mediterranean diet since it’s a lot easier. I don’t eat a lot but I’d occasionally eat salmon and shrimp and avoid red meats. It’s all about portion control. My primary doctor and nephrologist have approved plant based or pescatarian diets. Good luck.
I can't believe you have a waiting list for a dietician. Sounds like you need to seek your own. If your insurance covers it ask for your doctor to recommend another person to investigate. I had a dietician while on dialysis and had one after transplant. It should be part of any good program.
