I am curious if anyone still has “normal” skin reactions to bug bites while on immunosuppressants. I have read that bug bites can be life-threatening with a weakened immune system. I am worried that there won’t be a typical itchy skin reaction or a small red bump, alerting me that I have been bitten. I feel a bit itchy every day, making me paranoid that I have been bitten by bed bugs, but I can’t be sure because I don’t have the 3 little red bumps in a cluster. I haven’t seen any trace of the bugs, but sadly I live in a building that cannot seem to get rid of bed bugs. Luckily I haven’t had any serious issues in my unit because I don’t have clutter and I use diatomaceous earth powder regularly to stop them. I have read that many people are itchy while taking immunosuppressants so I’m hoping it’s just the meds and not actual bug bites.
Any feedback would be very appreciated.

Hi, my husband had a liver transplant in 2016. We have been to Crete and Finland in the Summer where there are lots of biting insects. In Finland, mosquito bites are the biggest problem, He was bitten quite badly in 2018 and had a severe reaction which was swelling and a bit of pain, However, this wasn't much different from anyone else's response. The real issue is making sure you do not allow the bites to become infected. As always, if you are worried about any health issue related to your transplant contact your hospital team for advice.
