Hi, I am a 20 year old on haemodialysis with no swelling issues. I am somewhat concerned with how I will look post transplant. (Live related donor, if that makes any difference)

How bad was your swelling and how did you deal with it? Thanks.

A natural concern. I think the answer is you won’t know so if you can try to lessen any focus on this. I’m 15 months in to my transplant s and things are settling now . It can’t be rushed and each person is different. You have age on your side. Good luck

post transplant one will make urine, so no swelling

I am dealing with my second bout of kidney failure and as I recall once I got my transplant the first time, all the swelling went away. Once I got kidney failure again the swelling came back. Most of the time swelling occurs because of you having too much water weight, hence the need for dialysis but once you have a healthy kidney there are many health benefits that slowly but surely you should notice and the reduction of swelling is one. I hope this is helpful. I would also suggest talking to your doctor about what to expect when on dialysis and also once you have a transplant, but also know each person is different and will react differently.

Hi! I’m 27 and I was on peritoneal dialysis for 2 years and would have some swelling at the end of the day. I got my transplant this summer and have had no swelling at all since transplant. I was luck and new kidney started working during surgery (it is a deceased donor). I was a little worried of what the scar, the kidney inder my skin would look like and if the would be some type of “lump”. Turns out my surgeon tuck it really low almost the the groing/pelvic area. It is not even noticable when you look at my stomac.

I was on dialysis for over 5 years and never had any swelling whatsoever. But for some reason I was still passing loads of urine never had a problem with that. But as soon as the kidney wakes up properly your output she be normal and hardly any swelling. I am nearly 3 years post transplant and the only swelling I get now and then is in my lower leg on the transplant side. And that is normal apparently. So don’t worry about after the transplant just get yourself to that point and through it. Things will fall into place xxx
