Post transplant sugar fluctuates a lot. Anyone else go through this?

Hi,

I’m 2 months post transplant but am struggling with my blood sugar. It drops after lunch and middle of the night frequently down to the 60s and also goes as high as the 260s. I have a very routine lifestyle with lunch everyday at the same time and dinner as well. I walk after work on the treadmill and after dinner. My diet is also good too resulting in weight loss the past couple of months. I’ve been progressing well, but it’s just my sugar I can’t get under control. All my other numbers are great per the nephrologist and endocrinologist. Has anyone else gone through this and found a change that they made that worked for them?

I am 7 years post and mine still fluctuates. 130-230. I follow no diet but may need one. Weight has actually gone down and been the same for the last two years.

Hi, Kt4920, I'm almost 3 years out from my transplant and blood sugar is an ongoing issue. I have to monitor it regularly. Was not diabetic before transplant, but definitely am after. I'm on two meds for it but even so, it goes up and down just like yours, usually worst in the mornings. I haven't found anything to do except eliminate simple carbs (even complex carbs send it up) and keep track of the numbers. It's good you have an endocrinologist--of all my doctors now, that's the one I have to see most often.

Almost 6 months since transplant. I have had some problems with sugar levels. My envarsus dose seems to have been the cause. I started at 6mg daily and now at 3mg daily. Sugar levels seem to have stabilized. I also have a very routine life style. I walk 2 miles every other day and try to get to the gym 3 days a week and do light weight weight lifting. Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm 9 yrs post transplant & have been diabetic since 1989. I always controlled my Blood sugar with low carb & a very small dose of Glipizide, some times none at all. After transplant, I had to start taking insulin . The drugs, Prednesone etc. I was told effect your blood sugar. I test 4 times a day. My A1C is 6.1. I still do low carb & if I stay very strict to my diet, some times I don't need any insulin. Not to alarm you. but my coordinator's husband has liver problems & she told me the kind of blood sugar problems you are having might be a liver problem. However, I did have some wild swings with my blood sugar right after transplant. I wish you the best of luck & stay in contact with your transplant center for ANY questions.

I was type 2 medication controlled after my transplant because of the immunosuppressants and steroids my sugar was no longer controlled by tablets. I now have to take 2 different insulin pens and it’s back to a brilliant range. Apparently it is normal and to be expected. Which I never was told until it actually happened. Let your team know and they will work through everything with you babe. Also congratulations on your transplant ♥️
