Feeling very cold all the time - Kidney Transplant
Feeling very cold all the time
My husband had his transplant 14 months ago. For the past 12 months we slept in separate bedrooms because the thermostat had to be at least 78-80 degrees for his comfort. He felt immensely cold if the temp is below 78. At times he would even be shivering in bed.
However, his sensitivity of cold has changed over the past month. It is now closer to normal. Our thermostat now stands at 68-70 degrees. Not sure what caused the change.
Happy to be sleeping together again.
Dear Tahmed251,
Until I read, your 'Post', I had only Heard, of this, in the 'Literature'. Clearly, 'different' people, are affected Differently.... Put, like that, it seems obvious, doesn't it?
This could be due to, changes in the Blood Flow, Post Transplant or, the Body reacting to a 'new' Part. I honestly, don't remember, ALL the information- seemingly 'heaps' of it- that I was given, Post Transplant. (Rather like if you make an Investment, and all goes well, seven years later, do you remember ALL the possible 'warnings'? Dare, I say, Probably Not.)
I'm quite sure, that a Call to your own Doctors/ Consultants, would Definitely be, a good idea Tahmed251.
Good luck, will you let us know please?

It is probably just a side effect of your transplant drugs, but you need to tell your transplant coordinator about this issue. My transplant center tested me for thyroid and parathyroid issues. Sometimes too you can be taking more than is needed BP medicine. You need to let your doctors look into this and see if there is a reason for being cold all of he time.
I am 20 years post transplant and my doctor still monitors my parathyroid function. For me, it depends on the day, whether I am cold or not.
Message - talk with your transplant center.
I wonder if your body is just adjusting still to the transplant? Definitely worth mentioning to your doc
Let your transplant team know, and request tests. Do you know what your haemoglobin level is? Transplant patients can be susceptible to iron-deficiency anaemia - sometimes because of the medications. Also, as someone else has mentioned, a thyroid profile would ne helpful - underactive thyroid (hypo-) can cause you to feel cold. There are bound to be lots of other causes too. Your team and/or consultant will be able to test and advise you. Hope you feel better soon.
Hi Tahmed251, I read your post, it could be a side effect to the medications, let your transplant team know what is going on, and ask them to check your PTH level. 1 year after my kidney transplant I had to have my parathyroid removed due to Hyperparathyroidism, which did make me feel very cold at times, hope this helps, take care of your self.
I am almost 8 years post transplant & I am still sensitive to cold. My transplant team says it is the meds. Sometimes just washing my hands under tap water is cold on my skin. I have had some skin cancer on my face also, which can be very common among transplant recipients
Hello Tahmed251, my spouse had his transplant 14 mos ago and for around the first 8 months he was cold all the time, but it was due to problems in his health , mostly severely low red blood cells which took 8 mos to correct. Now he's not that way anymore. Make sure you talk to your transplant team about this and get an answer. I wish you the best!
I am 5 years post and still feel colder than I was pre-transplant. I sleep with half of the electric blanket only on my side and usually have a hoodie on.
I was pretty anemic before my transplant (almost 2 yrs ago) so was almost always cold. I'm still cold, but not as much, partly because my hematocrit is finally in the low end of the normal range, and I have changed how many layers I wear! I have invested in tank tops to wear under short sleeved tops in the summer and turtlenecks to wear under sweaters in the winter. I also have a collection of cardigans and hoodies for all occasions. And yes, I have discussed it with my transplant team, and they think my "solution" is adequate!
Yes I had the same experience
Hi l'm Tommy Cox. I am 70 and had my transplant 5 yrs ago and yes l get cold at times as well. I have also found that taking Iron and B100 complex helps greatly in reducing the chills l once repeatedly felt.Hopefully this helps you.
