The question comes up about what should one eat to stay healthy especially for us donors. Came across a great article written by a nephrologist about diet and kidneys. This article is for "normal" people with two kidneys but applies to us too. I also contacted this particular doctor who sent me the study from years ago that some if not most doctors are still following but is totally outdated. The advice commonly given that you can go back to your old eating habits but add a few more fruits and veggies is just plain harmful. Thus I am posting this link vegworldmag.com/health/plan...
Nutrition for health: The question comes up... - Kidney Donation
Nutrition for health
I was aware of Dr. Joshi's work, and am a great supporter of his. I am amazed and disappointed when I attend NKF functions and other gatherings for kidney patients. how prevalent the standard American diet food is.
Yeah, I know what you mean, a bunch of lip service and no action. We got a full blow health crisis because of food and very few want to do anything about it. I can't even get my group (Renewal) to hear about food changes. The good news is that the number of people identifying themselves as vegans or vegetarians has increased to 8% of the population.
The numbers are increasing, but the biggest obstacle is the medical system itself. I have heard many stories of how individual MDs stumble on to WFPB diet info, and then change their practice as a result. However, none of them ever talks about receiving this info in medical school. Unless/until that happens, I do not think we will reach a critical mass in the population--which means, more people will get and suffer and die from kidney disease needlessly.
Very good article! Luckily, I LOVE fruit and raw vegetables!
