Doing PD at home: Does anyone do PD at home... - Kidney Dialysis
Doing PD at home

Peritoneal Dialysis has several benefits however, it is not suitable for every patient. The abdomen or belly of some people, particularly those who are morbidly obese or those with multiple prior abdominal surgeries, may make peritoneal dialysis treatments difficult or impossible. Peritonitis (infection of abdomen) is an occasional complication although should be infrequent with appropriate precautions. You will need training for PD. Consult with your doctor about which dialysis option is best for you.
Hi Quita. My husband did PD for almost a year until he received his transplant. It went well for him. As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages. In my husband's case, his nephrologist checked him to see if he was physically suited for PD. He then stated PD would free up his time since it's usually done overnight while sleeping. The doctor added that it would also offer my husband the best opportunity to receive a new kidney since it didn't involve the vascular system. Getting a transplant was very important to us. As for drawbacks, we had to find space to store the large inventory of supplies and solutions needed in our home. It also took more time to "fine tune" the proper blend of solutions needed to best clear the toxins from his body than we expected. Hubby did not experience any infections since we were scrupulous with hygiene. Hope this helps you in your decision making.
I've been on PD since mid May. I'm still getting used to it but on the whole find it easy. I sleep okay now that I have conquered restless leg syndrome. I am very careful with sanitation, taking extra steps to avoid infection. Write again with your specific questions so we can be more help.
