I do not use cow's milk for anything. I use almond creamer in my coffee. I like Silk. Just check the additives in anything dairy.

Thanks so much Basset, will give it a try. I’ll see if I get other ideas too x

I’m lactose intolerant so I use rice milk

I have just seen Waitrose sells it…now to find the nearest waitrose!😀

Horsie I saw rice mentioned before but I am struggling to find it. I live in Scotland and Tesco and Sainsbury’s say sell it, but its never been in stock. What does it taste like? I’d like if for tea and cooking porridge. Thank you x

I don’t think it has much taste to it. When I was in the hospital all they had besides cow milk was soy and that had some taste to it but it wasn’t bad.

hi, I’ve been lactose intolerant for many years, even before CKD. Now that I read every ingredient I could not find almond or oat milk w/out preservatives. I bought a small appliance that makes 8oz almond milk in 5 mins. It uses 2Tbsp almonds and 1 cup water…..presto non dairy anything. If you would like the name and manufacturer DM me, since I don’t know if I can promote a brand on this site.

And it can actually last up to 3 days in fridge.

Wow! Well done you , what does your almond milk taste like? Thank you for this idea. Might be useful for others x

Hi, the brand is Nutr. In the US I bought it on line and got 10 or 15% off of $159. It’s also sold at Williams Sonoma. I bought the 8oz. It’s small does not take up much room on counter and looks great. It comes with a strainer and I strain directly into a jelly jar. Tastes wonderful and fresh. Sometimes I put in 1/4 tsp of vanilla to sweeten. They have a booklet that gives you recipes on oat, walnut, etc and on smoothies + a very good website. My husband, who has never met a preservative he doesn’t like, loves the fresh almond milk.

Good luck. Lmk if you want any more info

I suppose you could substitute cashews, in the machine?

MinnadeParis profile image
MinnadeParis in reply toCuriousCKD

Hi Curious, it sure does make cashew milk. Here’s a couple of pics. Lmk if you get it and how you like it.

I bought Nutr in white it’s about the size of a small thermos

Thanks so much for that recipe. If anyone has a coffee grinder or spice grinder that will also work. Also need a strainer

I like rice milk, when I eat cereal. In my opinion, it doesn’t have a dominant flavor. It just looks a little watery. I am currently using one tablespoon of Silk’s plant based whipping cream in 500 ml of cold brew coffee per day. My one (not so) guilty pleasure in my daily potassium allowance. 🤗

Miss-guineapig profile image
Miss-guineapig in reply toCuriousCKD

Thank you Curious , must explore this whipping cream…sound lovely x

I like it, but, because it contains coconut oil, it tends to solidify. The advice on the container says to shake well before using. I did that, but the “cream” was so thick, it didn’t pour out. I was so surprised at first, then I remembered the coconut oil, and realization struck me. So, you can either take a chopstick, or the handle of a spoon to fish out what you want. I suppose you could leave it out for awhile to let if warm up a bit, however I am too impatient. I could not taste the coconut, but then my taste buds are toast, due to whatever… 🙄😊

Oh, Country Crock brand also has a plant based whipping cream out as well, made with water, lentil protein, coconut and canola oil. It doesn’t solidify, and the label says, “Do not shake”. I like it a little better, because it stays liquid. I try to keep the measurements at one or 1 1/3 tablespoons per day.

Both brands suggest two tablespoons (100 calories) per serving… 🤗

I actually use the whipping cream to make whipped cream. When it is half whipped I add 8 Oz. Of Fage 0 percent fat yogurt to cut the sat fat. I also add vanilla and a 1/4 cup of monkfruit sweetener. My guilty pleasure

CuriousCKD profile image
CuriousCKD in reply toOldTownhammock

Great use of ingredients! I’ve discovered coconut sugar, which I use sparingly. Also Allulose combined with monk fruit is very good.

Is milk really that bad for CKD?

Miss-guineapig profile image
Miss-guineapig in reply toRunBrianRun

By what I read here Runbrain it certain is, I do take cows milk…just a little in tea and also half water/half milk in my porridge but long term I need to get focused. 😀

The article below by Cheetiecat is well worth reading I think RunBrian.

I think it depends on your bloodwork results are, in my case, for potassium and phosphorus which are restricted.

Isn't calcium hard on your kidneys as well?

Thank you for the responses. I’m a big milk drinker and this sounds like I need to rethink this. I used to take protein shakes with milk, at least 1.5-2 litres a day and a total protein intake from diet and supplements of 1.5 x my body weight so around 120-130mg

I’ve stopped all that now but I still have milky coffee in the morning and in my tea.

☺️ that’s very sweet of you. Thank you. It’s been a fascinating and challenging journey and I guess I am proud of my achievements. There’s no doubt I’m a totally different person to the man who first stepped on to that treadmill 5 years ago. I am desperately hoping that this kidney problem won’t stop me doing the things I love most. It’s only been a few weeks since I first got the call from the doctor to retake my blood test and I’m still in a bit of trauma tbh. 😢

CheetieCat profile image
CheetieCat in reply toRunBrianRun

Yes it is mind blowing! I'm only a couple of months myself since my first definitive blood test. Like yourself came straight here for information as GP not so worried. Best advice I got was take control of your own health, makes sense. Bought stopping kidney disease books by Lee Hull, well worth a read.

CheetieCat Did the books help you at all? I’m just deciding whether to just get one or all of them.

CheetieCat profile image
CheetieCat in reply toRunBrianRun

I've read the first book so far. Second is still on my tbr pile, lots of info to take in with the first book. Think if you go on to the web site there is an option to download for free, only saw this after I'd purchased from Amazon though. From what I can see the second book is more on your food, like a more kidney friendly way of eating.

RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRun in reply toCheetieCat

Brilliant. Thank you for that. Glad I asked as I was about to shell out for it on Amazon 😅

CheetieCat in reply toRunBrianRun

😫 Just had a quick look on the website and it's only showing chapters not the actual books! Sorry for giving you the wrong info, it's either changed or it's my fibro fog at work!🤦 Might give you a good taster before buying though

RunBrianRun in reply toCheetieCat

That’s no problem. I’m happy to buy it. Just thought my luck was in that’s all 😂

You could always borrow it from your local library

RunBrianRun profile image

I’ve been out and bought some Barista Oatly and low fat almond milk. I’ve done a taste test and the oatly wins hands down but it is quite expensive! It’s also really hard to know how much potassium and phosphorus is in them.

What milk do you drink?

Miss-guineapig profile image
Miss-guineapig in reply toRunBrianRun

For me, it’s limited semi skimmed cows milk but after this post I will try a few of the ideas to see what I like x

RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRun in reply toMiss-guineapig

So let us know what you think of what you try 😀 I found the almond milk very watery compared to the oatly

Miss-guineapig profile image
Miss-guineapig in reply toRunBrianRun

Will do!

CheetieCat profile image
CheetieCat in reply toRunBrianRun

I like oat & soya, tend to buy Aldi's own brand as it's much cheaper and it's really ok. Alpro is nice too but again more expensive. Your taste will change after a while, can't stand the smell of real milk anymore!

RunBrianRun in reply toCheetieCat

I was Aldi today looking through their milks. I’ll definitely try them out. Thank you

I use Silk unsweetened Almond and alternate using Silk unsweetened Almond & Coconut Milk. The latter has less potassium than plain unsweetened Almond. I've gotten used to the flavors. No phosphate/phosphorus...?

RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRun in reply toDana66CKD

That’s interesting. Where can I buy this? I haven’t noticed Silk when I’m out shopping, but then again I hardly even glanced at milk alternatives before.

I buy at local grocery store in vegetarian/vegan section. I'm sure you'll find😍
