Several symptoms pointing to kidney issue ?

Hi all, new to this forum :)

I'm 50y old male thin body, I've noticed that after eating certain foods, my blood pressure starts rising. For instance I did eat roasted peanuts (no salt) 2oz/day for several weeks, blood pressure went from 110 to 145. Stopped eating them, in two weeks bp went back to 110. Same with eating 3 bananas/day, after several weeks bp went again from 110 to 145 then back to normal after stopping eating them. Same thing happened when taking 1 table spoon of lemon juice/day. This high bp also does heart pounding at night and also some sort of overall weakness.

I suffer from severe dehydration since about 10 years ago

Creatinine level tested at 71 umol/L. I have a thin body, my food is mostly pita bread (self made), pasta and cabbage (napa type).

Also, when I eat something more salty, the skin on my hand gets dry - feels like it's stretching - 2-3 hours after eating this.

If I eat a small amount of sugar- like one tea spoon, urine amount will increase for the following 7 hours. I tested blood sugar for diabetes - normal level.

I have severe constipation issue - go out every 5-7 days. I do take supplementary fibers.

A small background. In 2009 I underwent a turbinate reduction surgery - a structure inside the nostrils. Ever since, my nostrils have been completely dry at night and also mostly blocked (Empty Nose Syndrome condition). After several years I started a food diet (excluded several foods) which helped keeping nostrils more open at night - I also need to drink a glass of water every hour, otherwise my skin on hands gets dry and nostrils get too dry. My understanding for this need of water is my lungs are loosing humidity due to long term dry nostrils.

Sorry for the long post. I have an appointment for a CT scan with iodine contrast in a few weeks for an abdominal pain. I wonder if taking the iodine contrast is a good idea - the hospital doesn't have alternate contrast.

Thanks!

Welcome. You have reached a forum for sharing information and support for CKD. Please keep us posted if you are diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease.

What a confusing array of symptoms . Mild CKD is considered a reading of 69 or less for several months. There are no symptoms early on though. You might have allergies, or your body may not like your diet, and needs more protein or something. I know some contrast dyes can't be used in CKD, but I don't know about iodine. Best to you.

Hi Oragx, why do you think you have a kidney issue? Normal creatinine is 61.9 to 114.9 µmol/L so yours at 71 is within range. From what you are writing, I think you might want to reconsider your diet with more fruit, vegetables and food that has fiber. Pasta and bread are mostly empty carbs. Lemon juice and bananas are both given to people to help with diarrhea so I am not sure they should be as prominent in your diet as they are. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day so although the 140+ readings aren't ideal, they aren't crazy high. Also, wait 30 minutes after eating to take your blood pressure. Have you considered talking with a registered dietitian?

Hi, I have some of those problems with foods, especially sugars even natural sugar from fruit. I have food sensitivities and eat gluten free. I suggest getting tested by an allergist or imunologist.

It's miserable not to tolerate certain foods. I hope you find help with that.

Wishing you good luck.

Thank you all. I posted the blood pressure (bp) reaction to some foods because those foods are rich in potassium/oxalates/C vitamin, which I understand are harder on kidneys that have limited function. The bp increase was related to those foods, as soon as I stopped eating them, the bp went back to a normal 110-115 which stays to this day - I no longer eat those foods. Is this increase of bp which makes me wonder if my kidneys work well. I have to take iodine contrast in a short while and I understand it can be harmful on kidneys with low function. As for the food I usually eat - pasta, bread, cabbage, unfortunately it's about the only things that I can eat without affecting my nose breathing condition (a different story).

I am also new. I am having to monitor what I put in my mouth as well. The internet has helped me in eating what not to eat like bananas and other foods with high potassium. I am also including more of the fruits that contain seeds like melons, blue berries and cranberries. Check out the Holistic Doctors on the internet. Thank you for sharing about the dry hands, I will try it to see if that works for me. I will drink more fluids.

I will pray for you and your health.

Original poster. I would like to mention that increase in blood pressure happens only at night time (when I wake up from sleep), it seems this is called nocturnal hypertension and indeed is linked to kidney disease, among other factors. This nocturnal hypertension also shows as a heart 'pumping' which is different than heart pounding. It's the feeling of heart pumping hard and feeling 'smashed'.

In response to the comment about bananas and potassium, I found the internet to be actually recommending bananas as being beneficial to kidneys. Unfortunately, internet is what it is, I had to dig more into forums to find out that indeed, lack of potassium can harm kidneys while excess of potassium can also adversely affect kidneys.

I would like to add a small information about long term dehydration issue. In my situation, I also had teeth pain after a walk outdoors, and my eyes got sensitive at night from car headlights - especially the new bright white ones. Once I started drinking water regularly - every hour, these issues went away. Especially the strange pain in the teeth, I started drinking a glass of water before going outside, this stopped the pain.

A note about excess amount of urine after eating food with sugar. Actually, what I call sugar is extremely small amounts of sugar. For example, I ate fish sticks that had 2 gr of sugar in total, this was enough to trigger a large amount of urine in the following hours. When this happens, I also feel a abnormal urge to urinate, kind of sudden and 'impossible to resist'. This can also be triggered by some fruits such as a single apple. Strawberries don't have this effect. The days when I eat with absolutely no sugar at all, I urinate normal amounts and the 'urge' feeling is completely normal. Suffice to say most days I don't touch any sugar at all. I did pass a prostate check, normal. My understanding is this reaction to sugar is due to the kidneys not functioning properly and increasing the amount of urine to eliminate the sugar from blood.
