Acute kidney injury that went untreated for years…

Hello Everyone. So I have a question for those of you who have had acute kidney injury. My acute tubular injury went unnoticed for years, so I have chronic now. Recently, I’ve started treatment for daily low blood pressures ( the believed cause). My doctor said he thought my eGFR “might increase a little”…right now I’m at eGFR 40 at 45 years old.

From what I have read acute need to be treated right away for improvement. Is that true? Does anyone have experiences they can share about this or know anything about this? I just feel doubtful that it will increase at all after all this time.

**Also I just wanted to thank you ALL for discussing with me and the support you have given me with this new diagnosis. It means a lot to have people to talk too. Thank you.

My primary doc at the time missed the difference in my numbers until I was stage3b. The cause was being on the wrong blood pressure medication for years.my nephrologist blew a screw to put it mildly when I was referred .

Hi S_dillow, Thank you for your reply :) Did you gain any function back after the medication was removed?

I hope it works S_dillow. Sounds like you are in better hands now. I've been on my new medication maybe 2 months and I'm getting blood work soon. I should change my primary doctor also, I've never had one that was that good. Anyways have a good night!

There is a wrong blood pressure med? Would you mind sharing the name of the one that was incorrect?

Hi SMM62,

I think it varies, and we all react differently to different meds, rather than any specific BP med being a problem.

I had a drastic reaction to Indapamide last year (eGFR dropped from 85 to 29 in approx 10 days). I only took the Indapamide for 3 days, but I was also on a high dose (100mcg) of Losartan too, which contributed.

My GP stopped the Losartan, and switched me onto Amlodipine, and I am very grateful that my kidneys recovered........my last eGFR was 77.

Which one were you taking and why was it wrong? Which do you take now? I am sorry that you didn’t gain any function back!

I was on metropolol 100mg for probably 10 years or more and then losartan was added.im on four different blood pressure meds now that have my bp under control but my numbers keep dropping.i got covid once and it did irreversible damage to my kidneys.

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Were they able to biopsy your kidneys and explain what happened regarding the Covid? Or perhaps what type of damage it actually did?

I surely hope that as time goes on perhaps you will see some improvement, but obviously when you state it is irreversible that is not likely to happen. ☹️
