I suggest asking the doctor to give you the specific reason that he/she prescribed the captopril.

Look it up on the internet, and see if it is prescribed to help protect kidneys. I know several blood pressure medications are. Just be careful that your BP doesn't go too low then you can end up with more problems. This happened to me. I went into acute kidney failure and while I have regained most of my function back not all.

It's a bit unusual to prescribe it prophylactically if you don't have high blood pressure and aren't spilling protein in your urine. I would ask more questions.

When the kidneys malfunctions, it affects many of our organs - including the heart.

I had HBP before I was diagnosed with CKD more than +35 years ago. I also had gout, elevated cholesterol ,etc. After transplant, they were all gone.

I have a very progressive Nephrologist and I ask a lot of questions. Every medicine I take, he explains why and I also ask further (you should also do this exchange of ideas so you are well educated) . I had normal purine and cholesterol (high normal at 80-90% of the table) - and I ask him why I am taking medication for them. He explained - why mild doses protects the kidney. He also rejected medications that harms the kidney.

Be inquisitive with your Nephrologist from the start and for everything. He is more than a provider - he is your companion in your journey. The right Nephrologist must be trusted.

Hope this helps.

Excellent post.

Actually, when you read the studies, even without high bp or protein spillage, they do have protective effects. Hopefully you are on a low dose.

My endocrinologist prescribed Fosinopril when I first started seeing him. I didn't have high BP but he said that it protects the kidneys besides being good for HBP. I've been on a med for HBP since, through several doctors, PCP and nephrologist.

Do you have type 2 diabetes? If so, that would make sense to help your kidneys with the Captopril.

Ask you physician if you aren't sure.

Best wishes for a happy, healthier new year!
