30 y/o F with low GFR

Hi all

I'm 9 months postpartum and went in for an annual check up. Everything turned up normal except for my kidney function which is at 69. Doctor said is still normal, but low, and wants to retest me in 3 months. Meanwhile I'm left Googling kidney disease and fear that is where I am headed.

The doctor made it sound like I'm responsible for this by abusing medications but I literally don't take anything except Levothyroxine as I've had Hashimotos [hypothyroid] since 2018.

He said we will see what the next blood test says. Should I be worried?

Hello,It's always good to get these checkups but sometimes the results do leave us wondering. Having another test in 3 months sounds about right to check this. I have been told though that anything over 60gfr is normal for kidneys. Also, these tests are just a snapshot of kidney function at that time. It could be that you were perhaps a little dehydrated when the test was taken. I would wait and see what the next test is like and make sure you drink water beforehand.

Sorry to hear your doctor made you feel like that about your medication. If any medication makes problems for us, it is up to our doctors to prescribe something else! So not your fault.

I must add though, your doctor has done the right thing by retesting you. Many doctors ignore any slight decline in kidney function and we are not even told until we have problems so well done to yours for that.

I am sure others on here will have more advice to give. I would be inclined to drink plenty of water each day, avoid things like ibuprofen, eat healthy and exercise; all of which will help your kidneys to work well. Then enjoy life and that lovely little baby.

Best wishes,

Mgt

CONGRATULATIONS on the new baby whom I hope is already sleeping through the night! (Ha!) Sounds as if the 3 month lab testing is good but sorry the doctor tended to blame you for the decline. Isnt he supposed to be in charge of your medical care? Honesty that's crazy what he said. Try not to worry. Its likely that your body is still adjusting to all the changes as well as the stresses associated with caring for a newborn. Keep us posted. There's a lot of us who care and want to hear from you.
