Hi and welcome to the community. We do have a number of folks here in this community who are on dialysis or have been in the past and hopefully you'll hear from someone soon. Are you aware of another community called Kidney Dialysis? You might get more responses in that community and sooner, so please check that out. Wishing you and your husband the best.

Hi. I'm a caregiver to my hubby who was initially on HD and is now on PD. He's been on dialysis for a year. Thankfully, my husband has never been nauseous on either type. But his taste for food has changed - he no longer enjoys fruits and veggies as much and so forth. And his portion size is smaller - I sense some of that may be due to the fact he carries PD fluid throughout the day. (I keep a close eye on his diet and weight.) Yet, it's quite common for those on dialysis to experience nausea and so forth and it can be due to speed of dialysis, frequency of dialysis, swings in blood pressure, clearance of toxins, type of dialysis (some do better on PD, others on HD) and more. It's a big problem because lack of appetite leads to malnutrition which affects quality and length of life. I would bring this up at the dialysis center and the entire team: nephrologist, dietician, your primary doctor, and others. This requires a solution and I wouldn't rest until it's given to you - both you and your spouse matter and deserve to live a decent life.

Hi CB09, I ve been on dialysis for 16 month's, the first two months were ok but then for several weeks, I could nt eat, everything make me feel ill, I lost weight, had restless legs, I was given some medication for the restless legs, it eventually sorted itself out & now I m ok, I have the occasional day where I go off certain foods but not to the extent that it makes me ill

I don't always have enough appetite to get get my recommended ,,,90 grams od protein a day with food, so I use a a protein bars or collagen drink supplements .I get the collagen drinks from my kidney clinic. I am a diabetic, so they have to be kow sugar. I try to get the ,40 gram versions of protein shakes. It slso helps to have more frequent smaller meals with low volume-,high protein sources.
