Those are the two primary causes of CKD. I have both. However, with a detailed medical history and an ultrasound, the nephrologist determined that the T2D was the cause of my CKD.Oddly enough on the day I was given the CKD diagnosis, I was told I could stop all medications for diabetes.

In order to slow the progression of CKD, you must get any underlying conditions under control if possible.

Best of luck.

Answer is both. And it is very common. Work on getting both in control is the first step to saving the kidneys.

Hi Tom. People often view high blood pressure and diabetes as two separate and independent factors in kidney disease. And that's generally not the case - both are often outcomes of the diabetes. Diabetes stiffens or takes out the blood vessels everywhere throughout the body (including in the kidneys) and this, in the vast majority of cases, creates the high blood pressure. So diabetics not only suffer from kidney disease, but also incur heart attacks, blindness, amputations, and more at a much higher rate than those without the condition. I know, as a caregiver to my diabetic husband now on dialysis, the ravages that diabetes created in his family. Diabetes is the primary monster behind it all. Sadly, it's epidemic in the US and fuels the the majority of the medical industry. Yet there's much people can do to stop it in its tracks, particularly through diet and exercise. Here's a great article on diabetes and its effect on blood pressure. canopyhealth.com/en/members....

Diabetes when bg is not regulated. That being said with the newer SPLG-2 regulators such as Jardience, can get into DKA ( diabetic ketoacidosis) episode with normal range blood glucose. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) can be had by either condition. Get the weight down, exercise and diet under control and no worries.

Amen to getting the weight off and under control. Medications rarely offer a complete solution. Healthy living, including getting off of them, is the best way to stop corrosive diabetes activity. My husband, while on dialysis, finally managed to do so last year - much to the cheers of his medical team. So, go forth, and conquer - if one has that disease!

I was just wondering how doctors determine which one caused chronic kidney disease

It's cause and effect - the diabetes creates blood vessel issues which then kills organs. Specifically, Diabetes Type 2 uses insulin resistance to allow sugar to build up in your blood which causes your body to retain salt and fluids, which, in turn, increases your risk for high blood pressure. According to the link provided earlier, "Over time, diabetes damages the small blood vessels in your body, causing the walls of the blood vessels to stiffen. This increases pressure, which leads to high blood pressure.” This eventually kills the kidneys, eyesight and more as blood vessels populate all your organs. Some doctors will tell you diabetes and others will say blood pressure caused your kidney disease - depending on how you present and drill down on the question. Both answers are right - Diabetes Type 2 is the enemy (assassin), and its weapon of choice is blood sugar (bullet) and its influence on blood vessels and blood pressure. Always be mindful that the blood pressure is influenced by sugar coursing through and building up in the blood in the vessels. And the only real solution is diet and weight management. Getting off all diabetes medications (normal A1Cs), generally stops additional destruction immediately. My hubby has been there, and done that - but a little too late to save his kidneys.
