Can anyone recommend the best book for kidney friendly recipes please? There are SO many out there with reviews saying 'this is a great book' then someone else saying it is rubbish. My cooking skills are not particularly good and I need to cook for me (CKD4 GFR 10), and my wife who had normal kidneys. Hoping someone can advise?
Thanks

Your profile states that you are in Stage 5. I don't know where you live but by this time you should have met with a nephrologist and a renal dietitian. The specific guidance you are seeking should have been made known to you by either one or hopefully, both. There is no one size fits all for a kidney-friendly meal plan. Your meals at this point should be based on lab results and monitored very closely by your doctor. If for some reason you haven't spoken to them about this let me direct you to davita.com and look at their recipes. No recipe should be taken at face value. Again, it depends on your lab numbers, but if one recipe sounds good but contains a vegetable you don't like substitute that one for one you do like. Refrain from using any added salt. Instead, add some herbs and spices for taste and flavor.
At Stage 5 your fluid intake may be restricted so you'll have to watch that as well. If you've already spoken to your nephrologist and renal dietitian and for some reason you aren't getting the help and direction you need, and if you live in the USA, then let me also suggest you go to eatright.org and in the upper right hand corner of the home page, click on FIND AN EXPERT. Enter the information they ask for and hopefully you will be able to find a Renal Dietitian close to you who can help.
Hi Mr Kidney,. I should have put CKD 4. I'm on the precipice of dialysis and yes I have been seen and supported by lots of people, have another dietician app next Tues. I have been trying to keep away from known foods, alcohol etc but I think I should really knuckle down and be much more stricter with myself, so that I'm used to this way of life as that is what I'll HAVE to do pretty soon anyway. I think I have just been winging it all this time and because I still feel ok at 10% ...i know it's going to change soon. Now I really have to face up to it. Thanks for your reply tho. ☺️
HI Topcat, There is no one size fits all. It depends on things like your potassium and phosphorous levels and other medical conditions that you have. I would highly suggest sitting with a renal dietician who can give you some guide lines to follow. Then you can adapt things to what your needs are. For me, there is no one book or website that fits perfectly. You have to pick and choose according to your needs.
Thanks Bassetmommer. Dietician app next Tues. I think I'll ask them what a typical daily intake of all nutrients I should be aiming for... Haven't seen any list online. I need to understand from figures on labels what is nice and low etc. This is a great site, only just registered a few days ago ( more signs of denial on my part!) Thanks again. 😊
The dietician will help with the amounts of nutrients you should aim for. And then use a tracker to keep an eye on those levels. Eventually, you will know how much stuff is in the foods you eat often and it get easier.
I have found 500 Low Sodium Recipes by Dick Logue to be helpful. His emphasis is on sodium, but he gives a nutritional analysis for each serving that includes sodium and potassium plus other nutrients.
Following because I’m supporting Dad who’s exactly at the same crosspoint. We were given a list of food to avoid vs. food to eat. But no recipes per se - so many a times it’s leaving out it to our creations. Let me know if you’re interested in that - I’ll be able to share a pdf!
