Hi Megan. My husband is on dialysis (since June) and that contributed significantly to his weight loss. As you probably know, when kidneys fail, water retention is common. Dialysis remedies this situation. It also improves appetite for some - although not so much for my husband. Of course, dialysis comes with food restrictions so that limits food choices as well. My husband now weighs the same now as he did when he joined the military - very slim and trim. I understand that there are dietary restriction post transplant as well. Should he be so lucky to receive a new kidney, I suspect his weight will remain controlled then as well. Hope this answers your question.

Thank you so much! Ya my doctor said that some gain as much as a 100 pounds after a transplant which I would think would be so unhealthy!thanks again!

I think it varies after a transplant - some people gain because of the drugs and some gain because there are fewer dietary restrictions or because they have more of an appetite as they are healthier. Some people lose because they have more energy and can get back to doing activities they love. I lost while in hospital after the transplant because I had no appetite and then went back to my normal weight and I’ve been the same ever since.

Appreciate your comment. The suppression drugs, the diet, the appetite - I sense my hubby will adjust and his weight will pretty much stay the same. The transplanted people I've met all appeared to be of normal weight...which surprised me, actually, since I assumed they'd look puffy, maybe sluggish, etc. Not the case.

As long as you stick to healthy food choices and commit to a healthy active lifestyle, and don’t have other complications to deal with then that’s definitely achievable. I must say, I have much more energy and am enjoying getting out doing things again! Your body does adjust to the drugs and it’s nice to feel (and look) normal (minus the disaster of hair loss!). A new kidney certainly changes things. Wishing you and your husband all the best! And be patient in the early days with the steroids - they do cause a bit of havoc with appetite and emotions and puffiness but it gets better as the dose drops.
