Very large kidney

Hey all, new here but I’m trying to see if anyone else has had a quite large kidney (or has seen one). Had an ultrasound done and my left kidney measured 23.8 x 8.0 x 10.5 cm. Looking around online I can only find normal lengths are aprx 11cm so I’m a bit over double that. Thoughts? Ideas?

Hi and welcome to the community. There can be a number of reasons for you having one kidney enlarged. I've included an article on one of them. This may have nothing to do with you but I thought it okay for you to read and then ask your physician when you receive their explanation if it matches with the article's topic.

I can also recommend that you go to davita.com and register for a virtual 90-minute, free Kidney Smart class. You'll get a lot of information and resources to help you understand about CKD in general. In the meantime you can also go to kidneyschool.org and view their learning modules. Anything you have questions about should be directed to your nephrologist, who would be the best type of physician to help you deal with this diagnosis.

The DaVita website is also good for looking at RECIPES. A renal dietitian will look at your previous lab test results and work with you on developing a kidney-friendly meal plan that works for you. Look at your numbers for protein, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and calcium. Those numbers will tell you and the RD what modifications will be needed in the meal plan to make it all work for you.

I hope this helps you and gives you some direction. Best of luck.

Yes, mine was enlarged, due to hydronephrosis, retaining water due to a large stone blocking ureter. That problem was solved but kidney too far damaged, and is NFK (non functioning kidney), and left bean is only 53%. Do your feet swell a lot? Once I didn't know and ate breaded chicken a lot, and my feet swole up like loaves of bread, because of the added salt content! lol (I am on diuretics / water pills so I took one extra a day and it dissipated).
