Hi all I am new to the forum and hope there may be someone out there that can help with some information please. . My husband has stage 4 CKD. hes had a very bad time of late and had a severe drop in his function which thankfully has been rectified by having a ureter stent fitted. This has improved his GFR by 10 points over the past few months but it is still very low. ( 24 at last test) . We are desperately doing everything we can by having a very strict diet and hydration because we desperately need him to reach at GFR of 30 again so that he can be considered for a cancer trial as Unfortunately he has also been just recently diagnosed with recurrent stomach cancer. Not a great year at all so far and what with COVID 19 on top .... I am sure many of you are also extremely worried too. We are come across a drug call Froxiga . It has primarily been used with patients who have diabetes but a by product of the trial is that can dramatically improved kidney function even in people without diabetes. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this drug and if it has been effective as I cannot find it licensed for people with CKD as yet?

look forward to hearing from anyone who might have any information x

Hello lill22. I’m sorry to hear about all of the distress you and your husband are suffering, dear. I hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of researching the drug Farxiga, and I have attached below, a link from Medical News Today that lists some of the side effects of this medication. If your husband already has kidney issues, I would strongly reconsider taking this drug as one of the side effects is kidney damage (among other things).

I hope you will find this information helpful. Perhaps his doctor could prescribe something more kidney-friendly for him. Please stay well. I will keep both your husband and yourself in my prayers. I wish you both all of my best. God bless. 🙏🙏😊👍

To help you learn more about this and any other medication, I'd recommend you use the following website and look up any medication prior to using it. It will also provide you with information on interactions with other health issues, drugs, and food interactions.

You can set up a free account and enter all medications and get the information before you leave the physician's office.

Where did you find that it can improve GFR? In the information I found on the drug, it says that people with severe kidney impairment, shouldn't even take this drug as it could worsen kidney function.

farxiga-hcp.com/t2d-hospita...

"Acute Kidney Injury: FARXIGA causes intravascular volume contraction and can cause acute kidney injury. Reports of acute kidney injury requiring hospitalization and dialysis have occurred with FARXIGA. If acute kidney injury occurs, discontinue and promptly treat

"Increases in serum creatinine and decreases in eGFR may be observed with initiation of FARXIGA. Elderly patients and patients with impaired renal function may be more susceptible to these changes. Consider temporarily discontinuing in settings of reduced oral intake or fluid losses

"Before initiating FARXIGA, evaluate renal function and monitor periodically. FARXIGA is not recommended when the eGFR is <45 mL/min/1.73 m2"
