Last Year March 1 2019 To Be Precise, My Hypertensive Daddy Was Very Sick. We Got To The Hospital. The Doctors ran a test on him, his urinalysis was ok. But his ultrasound showed “diminished corticomedullary” and They Said It Was CKD and his Egfr was 35. Then He Did Dialysis Once And After 3 Months, His Kidney Size Returned To Normal and His GFR has Been Within 85-92. Then This New Year January He Did An Egfr Test His Results Was Still In 85. But I Noticed He Has Swollen Ankles. What Could Really Be Wrong. Moreover He Doesn’t Have Protein or Blood In Urine.

I Want To Ask, Does He Truly Have CKD? Or is it and AKD or AKI ? Also What Can Be Done For His Swollen Ankles.

Which blood pressure medication is he on? Remember some BP medication like Amlodipine can cause swollen ankles.

He’s on amlodipine. 10mg. 2 times a day.

Yikes! I was told in the emergency room once that one can't take more than 10mg almodipines in one day. They were asking me had I taken my medication that morning and yes, I had taken my usual dosage. (They wanted to know if they could add the second 5mg dose and were asking first.) Please have that checked out.

Swollen ankles can be many different things but given his history of CKD or AKI no matter which it is best to make his doctor aware so they can follow up. It could be something as simple as a side effect of medication or it could be he is retaining water due to another reason. It is best to not self diagnose.

Without trying to diagnose why his ankles are swollen (which his doctor should do), these things can help regardless:

1) restrict salt intake (don't add salt to your meals/avoid processed foods)

2) 45 minutes walking/day

3) get enough sleep

4) no alcohol consumption

5) drink enough water

Diuretic drugs might be prescribed for retaining water, but that can only be done by a physician because there are so many factors to consider.

We cannot diagnose here, but only speak from our own experience. For me, I could not take amlodipine . I think one of the side effects of the drug is fluid retention.

His doctor needs to know about his swollen ankles so he can do something about it. Only multiple lab tests over time will determine he indeed has CKD or not. Talk to the doctor.

Hello xyz96211. I can certainly vouch for the fact that Amlodipine ( Norvasc), can cause fluid retention. In fact, my nephrologist took me off of that medication (it was initially prescribed by my PCP for high blood pressure), because my feet, ankles and calves were huge, and his exact words were, “It’s certainly not doing you any favours.” And he was right. After a week or so, that I was rid of that, even with my kidney issues, the swelling went down significantly! So, I would say, that’s definitely one issue that should be probed by his doctors.
