HI Nasaesa,

Welcome to the community. To the question about reversing kidney disease: it depends but it rarely reverses. But you can stop the decline and live a long healthy life with even 3a. I was 3a for over 11 years.

There are many things that you can do.

First of all: find the cause. If it was due to medications, stop the meds. If it is high blood pressure, get that under control. Was it due to diabetes, get stable with your sugars. There are a lot of reasons the kidneys get impaired so see what the doctor says.

Everyone is different and diet should be modified to fit you. But in a nut shell, here are some general suggestions:

1. Eat out infrequently. You have less control over your food choices.

2. No fast foods

3. No process foods such as frozen dinners or packaged products

3. Less meat the better, chicken and fish still have high potassium, eat sparingly

4. 1-2 cups of coffee and use real crème not non-dairy

5. Lots of water up to 2 liters unless told by the doctor to drink less or more

6. Incorporate more whole foods in your diet: vegetables and fruits

7. Little to no alcohol especially beer One glass of wine might be ok

8. Cook without salt. You will get used to it and then eating stuff with salt will taste bad

9. Do not take supplement, OTC drugs or other without checking with the doctor first.

10. Get Educated. Take classes on how to manage kidney disease. There are classes on the internet as will as maybe by your local Kidney Foundation davita.com/education/kidney...

I was diagnosed with CKD at stage 3b. My Doctor put me on an appropriate diet based on blood work. My CKD diet is restricted for sodium, phosphorus and potassium. Check with your Doctor about a diet or getting a referral to a dietitian. The diet has helped me.

Get your nephrologist to give you a referral to a dietitian experienced in CKD diets. Then between the 3 of you the diet should be clear and concise for you to follow in your own home. Blessings

Hey there! I am following a modified whole food plant-based plan, have ESKD and feel great. My doctor told me the other day, the inflammation in my kidneys has heavily decreased. I can highly recommend the FB page "Natural Kidney Journey". All the best!

will check that now. Thankyou. I am a vegatarian. To be honest i don't eat meat or fish no more. So i have been on a plant based diet for now.

If you find out how to reverse ADPKD, please let me know, I could use a miracle. As far as I know, you can slow it down and that's about it. I keep hoping. For your diet: there are plenty on the web. I stay away from anyone's diet recommendation that includes beef or pork. That has long been known to be detrimental to kidneys and promotes diverticulosis. Be sure to include insoluble fiber in your diet and know the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. No cereal, so far, has enough insoluble fiber. The soluble fibers are laxatives, as you probably know. The best starting place: a doctor you trust. Our past President Regan said it best: "trust, then verify".

For me it means no added salt, mostly low carb vegetables and fruit. Oatmeal with a Splenda/brown sugar mix. Rice cakes for my crunchy "salty" snack and dried out or wheat or rice cereal for my sweet. Mostly fish or chicken with small amounts of beef for soups. My main goal is to decrease protein which is hard on the kidneys and sugars which affects my diabetes. I have a notebook where I list the name of the item, it's serving size, calories, and nutritional content. It's easier for me to choose from a hard copy than to use a computer for this but everyone is different.
