It may not be as bad as you think. The GFR is just a snapshot of where you are at the time the labs were drawn. For example, two years ago when I found out I had CKD my GFR was 32. Through starting a kidney-friendly meal plan, increasing my exercise regimen and watching all medications I raised it up to a 48 average for the last two years. You have to be proactive and take charge of your health.

By the way, I also have T2D and for the last two years, I have not had to take meds for that. I do take several meds for my hypertension but at least with the right ones (finally) I have it under control.

My suggestion since you are new to diabetes is before you start any medications make sure you check out the medications use drugs.com to see if any of the meds recommended are counter-productive to CKD.

Ask your doctor for a referral to see a nephrologist and a renal dietitian. The nephrologist will get you started on a program to slow the progression of CKD and keep you healthy. The RD will help you develop a kidney-friendly meal plan that will greatly help you slow the progression by having you eat the best foods.

I'd also suggest the davita.com website to register for a free, 90-minute Kidney Smart class in your area. The class will help you by providing information and resources to help you discover what you need to learn to put together a Care Team of medical professionals who will give you their best medical advice and accept your final decision on treatment.

Best of luck.

Once again I find myself in agreement with Mr Kidney.

I, too, am a type II diabetic. My A1C is in check without medication since late July of 2013. I was only on medication for the diabetes for a total of 7 months following my initial diagnosis.

Initially I had no blood pressure issues. Now that my renal function has deteriorated to Stage V, renal failure, I have some problems with blood pressure. Medication hasn’t worked particularly well for me. So I am currently managing it with fluid intake restrictions and following a very low sodium diet.

Unlike Mr Kidney, I have not experienced similar results. My renal function has deteriorated over the past 8 1/2 years since I was initially diagnosed. I mention this simply to point out that there are no guarantees with all of this. So in addition to seeing a nephrologist and a renal dietician I’d strongly encourage you to learn as much as you can about chronic kidney disease. That will help you take control of your care and make good decisions regarding your diet and fluid intake on a daily basis🐶

I constantly say that I hope for the best even as I prepare for any inevitability. I think Mr Kidney’s experience is much more typical than mine, which is good news for you. I say that because three out of four nephrologists who have looked at my data comment on how unusual it is; they consistently state that they’re surprised by the ongoing deterioration. I’ve had a biopsy to determine if there was something else going on. The biopsy results showed nothing but the diabetes and not an extensive amount of tubular damage from the diabetes. I consistently hear that I should have much more renal function than I’ve got. So I guess my case is a medical mystery of sorts.

Nevertheless, I’d definitely do exactly what Mr Kidney advises. And stay in touch. All of this is both overwhelming and quite stressful at first. We’ve all been there. We may be able to help you navigate all of this.

And, nothing but good thoughts and best wishes!
